AP Environmental Science

I'm self studying APES, what book is good for a self studier to get a 4/5. I have SmartyPants, but it seems too thin, is SmartyPants good enough to get me a 4/5? (Assuming I thoroughly read it) Is PR any better?

I used PR + Barron’s flashcards.

I would definitely agree w/sd6. PR is the ultimate tool for APES. SmartyPants is an awesome book that most CC’er say has enough prep to garner a 4/5. PR goes a little more in-depth than SmartyPants. Maybe just get bothbooks?

^ why do you say PR is the best? (I just ask because some CC’ers say Kaplan is better…)

PR has a lot of the information that’s relevant to the test. Whereas Smartypants leaves things out. Kaplan, well I’ve never looked at it but most Kaplan tools for prep aren’t helpful at all, I woud just base it off of that. Plus PR is pretty widely accpeted, whereas Kaplan isn’t (as much).

I agree with the above. Smartypants is great but it is really more focused towards people who have taken the class and are looking for a quick review. I personally found that Kaplan made things far too difficult and included information that was unneccessary.

PR is definitely a happy medium. It gives just the right amount of information and the practice questions and tests seemed to be pretty representative of the real test.

I’ll throw on another vote for PR. It has all the information you’ll need to self-study.

Should I avoid Barron’s?

Barron’s isn’t bad. I find that Barron’s, like Kaplan, sometimes contains extraneous information but all together it is not horrible. PR is still the best option, in my opinion.

would it be okay for me to get the 2009 edition?

REA actually isn’t bad at all. I’m using and it’s great at covering the major topics, while thoroughly explaining the most common points per topic.

I don’t think that they’ve made any drastic changes since last year, so the 2009 edition should be fine.
