AP European History - tips, advice on it, i'll be taking it this coming year

I'm going to be taking this as my only AP Class as a sophomore this fall. I know many of you have taken it, but I'd like to know what's it like? Is it hard/or is it an easy A? what's the hardest thing about it? If you can, please give me some suggestions on it, or how to do well. I want a 5 on the Ap Exam, which I will be taking May of 2006.

hard or easy to get an A? well, it depends on the teacher. my teacher was excellent and she worked us hard, but she didn't have the heart to give anyone below a B. so it wasn't too hard to get an A.

what's the hardest part? the hardest thing for me was forcing myself to do the readings. you can get by without it, but reading it, then hearing it, then reviewing it really helps you learn the material really well.

how to do well? learn to love it. it took me awhile to get into it, but once i really got into it, it didn't feel like work anymore. I enjoyed the supplemental primary source readings, and i even enjoyed the papers i wrote in the class. second semester, i had around a 98% in the class, and i ended up with a 5. first semester, i was borderline. the first surge of confidence i got in the class was setting the curve on the 1st semester final. i think once i stopped worrying about my grade, i started to enjoy the class and my grades went up. it was awesome.

Hey - me too - but as a self-study. =P

hey i self studied ap euro last year and ended up with a 5. Since it was my junior year i had basically no time to read up any material except the week of the AP test. 2-3 days before the test i started reading Birdsall S. Viault's "Modern European History," which is a most excellent book. I read it for 3 days straight and got a 5. Good luck. Peace.

I simply took the damn test and got a 5, without taking the corresponding course. I ain't no genius either. I did have a european history course, however, though I was too lazy to take practice tests. I did read some AP EUro prep books in the days before the test however (too lazy to take notes).

However, I self-studied history for fun since I was a toddler so my situation may be abnormal.

It'll help to read/study a prep book(s) concurrently with your normal AP Euro studies.

Good luck!

I used A History of Western Society with the companion study guide and felt really prepared for the test. I did end up with a 4, but that's because my essays sucked big time. The multiple-choice section was a breeze.

was the multiple choice questions, were there any that you never heard of or material that wasn't covered in the class?

MODERN EUROPEAN HISTORY by Birdsall Viault= The Bible of AP Euro.

Get the above-mentioned book, read it, get a five. Simple as that. The book is amazing and helped me so much this year.

cliff, i skipped 10-12 MC questions, got probably at most 10 wrong, and still got a 5. Yes, there were many MC questions which I had no idea but the curve is great.

Yes, I didn't know about 4 of the ones regarding topics post-1950s but that's because I chose not to read the last two chapters of the book. :P

Ok thanks guys "Modern Europe History" - Birdsall Viault, why is this book so effective? I've never heard about it....all my teacher told us to get was the REA Review book with 6 practice tests for the AP Exam.

the book is a great review, it reads pretty well and covers most of the AP material. At first I was a little apprehensive because the book isn't made specifically for the AP, but after reading it i found that almost all the material on the AP Euro test is found in Viault's book.

Well, for me AP Euro was the hardest class I've ever taken. Maybe it was that the teacher sucked and I only cared enough to get the lowest A...but it was still really hard for me.. All I really remember is the Cromwell Sandwich. My advice would be...to study all year with AP practice books. and listen in class? cause i didnt do that..

the test..... was hard. beware!
but its just me, i am good at math and nothing else! WOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO partay in da hizzouse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sorry i am hyper

im sure you'll do fine..u just would have to really like the subject, and study it a lot.

definitely, listen in class. dont do random math instead no matter how fun it would be

is "Modern Europe History" how long did it take you guys to read? Because i think i'm going to be buying a lot of review books for the exam and i need time

it took me 2-3 days to read that book (although i read for 5 hours each day). In the end, I didn't even finish it (had 100 pages left in the book).

All right cool.

Anyone else who took the course?

Like any other class, it totally depends on the teacher. Ask around who took the class AT YOUR SCHOOL if it's easy or not. For example, my AP Euro teacher, while very cool and all, was essentially and easy A, and we didn't learn much in the process (I ended up with a 2 in the exam)

I didn't find the class to be very hard at all. Essentially, it was straight lecture based, tests were 5 mc questions (to get used to the format), an essay from an old ap exam, and ID's (pick 7 from a list of 10 - battles, people, etc - and identify with significance in 3-4 sentences). some booknotes as well, but those were 'pad' points.
