Is anyone taking it this year? How is your summer workload? Mine is completely ridiculous. I've been working on the packet assigned for about a week, and I'm not even halfway done with it. Is there any set standard for summer work, or is this what I'm going to have to expect from my specific teacher all year?

YAY, i am taking this course my sophmore year, can't wait! Heard from my school, the teacher is verrrry nice.

Yeah, I'm taking this course this year. I'm not looking forward to it though. I never liked history...

The workload is definitely just your teacher. Though whether it will persist throughout the year, only students who have already had the class at your school could say.
Back when I took it, we had no summer homework, but we did have homework pretty much every day during the year. My US History class, on the other hand, had essentially no homework. I think it really depends on the teacher.

Hmm... I've considered taking an online version of AP European (or U.S.) History. What do you think the challenge of this course would be for a motivated 8th grader?

I'm looking forward to what I'll learn, there's no question about that, but I don't know if I'm looking forward to the class. I like history, just not the way it's usually taught. Last year I had an awful teacher who put written notes on the overhead projector and lectured while we copied them. I didn't think until the last month of school to bring a tape recorder to record his lecture, because it was almost impossible to copy down and absorb the written information, and listen to his lecture about completely different material.

I'm hoping that I'll have better luck as far as history teachers go this year, but I've heard that she's terrible. If the summer work is any prelude to what she'll be like throughout the year, I don't think things will be great. She assigned the most absurd things...

We have no summer homework. At our school, AP Euro is not hardcore at all. It isn't really taught like an AP class. I'm just taking it because I'm interested in European history =)

The challenge? Everything. It's a challenging course for motivated 10th graders. Have you taken the prerequisite for a course like AP Euro or APUSH? Such as Global/World 1? If not, maybe you should consider taking that first.

I'd be taking it through Northwestern's Gifted LearningLinks program. My ACT scores are within the acceptable range for the course, and the only listed prerequisite is an essay. I'm not sure how this would compare to a standard, in-school version of the course, but it looks interesting. I'm in an advanced history class at school, though it isn't specifically labeled as being a certain number of grade levels ahead, like a math class. I'll be doing 10th grade math next year, and I was looking for a history class that might be more challenging.

If they're saying that you fit the criteria, go right ahead. :) I'm planning on taking online AP's through Johns Hopkins CTY this year, and I know that prerequisites there differ. If you feel that you can handle it, give it a shot.

I've never really looked into online classes before, and I've only seen what Northwestern has sent me. What sort of criteria are they looking for in programs like Johns Hopkins CTY and Duke TIP?

I'm not familiar with the Duke program, but in the JHU Distance Education program, crtieria is usually the class below it. I'm looking into taking AP Bio this year (which won't be offered to me in school until my senior year), and the criteria is at least a B in a high school biology class, in addition to qualifying SAT/ACT scores.

I took it last year, and it was a hell of a lot of work. But all worth in the end, if you like history... =)

^ Did you get an A, if yes did it increase your GPA by alot?

I took it last year, and it was a blast!

For those of you that have taken it, how is the AP test? Extremely difficult, or moderate? I'm guessing it's not a walk in the park.

I took it last year. If you do the work, it is worth it. I got the only A+ the teacher ever gave and a 5 on the exam.

I was supposed to take it, but it was dropped cause of low enrollment :[.

Ouch. That sucks. What are you taking as a replacement?

I don't know yet. I haven't decided, I just found out today.

Any advice on what I should take?
