Hi all,

when I was in high school I took the AP Calculus AB exam and received a 3 on it. Unfortunately, some of the schools I applied to only give elective credit for a score of 3 on the test and since Calculus 1 is a major requirement for CS, I must find a way to get credit for Calc 1. Is there any way I could take a test to get credit?

p.s. The schools dont accept CLEP credit, so thats not an opion

Which schools?

You could take it through an online CCC course, if you know the material all you need to do is test; or, if your CCC offers it, take the course credit-by-exam, but I doubt they will with calc.

Though, if it is a major prereq I would consider taking the course again and getting an A. I was in the same situation, I got a 3 on the AP Gov't exam, which would fulfill a major prereq for a polisci major, but I decided to take the course instead --3's don't look as good as an A imo.

I thought about taking it, but I don't really want to sit through 4 hours of lecture and 1 hour of lab every week listening to stuff I already know; I tried it once and it is pretty boring :) . I have read about course credit-by-exam but wasn't sure if the UC's would accept the credit. Irvine is the college that doesn't take the AP score of 3, btw.

Not sure if my information is correct, but if you're a CCC student, I was under the impression that you could get course credit for it if you apply it to IGETC, which is based on your CCC's policy rather than Irvine's. My counselor at Mission was the one who told me about this. ...Though someone at the assessment center at De Anza claims otherwise. >_>;

uh oh. I'm in the same situation then... I got a 3 on my AP calc exam too. My school (CSUF) gave me credit for it and i've been taking math classes and continuing to take math 250B in the spring 08 which is Linear Algebra and Differential Equations. Will the school I applied to see that I've been taking other math classes and let me have credit for Calc 1?

anvilfactory,

you're counselor was correct, but since MATH 2A (Calc 1) is a major requirement for a major in Computer Science and not general education I have to take Calc 1 again.

dbguy4eva,

it depends on the school. I believe most schools grant credit for a 3 or higher, just not Irvine :( .

We'll I applied to UCLA, UCI, UCB, UCSD... Would my addmission be affected because I didn't take the class?

dbguy4eva, why are you transferring from Fullerton? I applied there in addition to some UC's. Are you unhappy with your experience there?

Well I live near by, and college life isnt what I expected just because I still live in the same area... I felt that Fullerton was pretty boring and I'm just trying to transfer out of this area.

awesomo - Thanks for your reply. I'm in the same boat as some of you, 'cept for English. I was thinking of taking it anyway since I don't mind getting the practice... Oh, money wasted on the test...
