AP exam scores

Does anyone know how much value Columbia puts on AP exam scores? Do they even really look at them or consider them, or do they just care what grade you got in the class? Any insight would be appreciated!

They look at them. If you have an A in the class and a 2 or even a 3 on the AP, they'll realize that A you got probably wasn't too hard to get.
Also, a string of 5's will impress them, a string of 2's will deter them.

First of all, I believe you'd be sending adcoms the wrong message if you took AP classes but showed no evidence of taking the exams. Not taking the exam is a pretty good indication that a student was not serious about the class.

That said, scores are also a pretty universal evaluation of your performance in the subject (being graded on such a uniform scale and all) so a good score could only work in your favor (unless you like.. failed the class itself).

I'm just kind of nervous because I had a really really terrible European History teacher who knows nothing about European history and who has never taught AP. Last year I got a 5 on the US exam, and even though I'm going to cram in some studying before Friday, I'm expecting the worse.

My recollection is that Columbia doesn't ask to see AP scores. Anybody know for sure?

They don't ask but they're on a lot of HS transcripts. Also, if they're good, they should be sent.

It looks weird if you took the test and didn't tell them the score, they will wonder if you are trying to hide something. I had my counselor send in a copy of the AP score report.

Columbia was the only school that didn't explictly state to me to not send AP scores. I sent them, and I think they were a factor. However, I'm getting screwed by AP credit. If practice tests are true, then I'll only get credit for econ, calculus and chem, and my US history, us go po, statistics and bio will be for naught.

is it better to send a bad score (3) or just cancel it off your record and also is a 4 okay to send or do they just want 5s?

If you did well in the class, but know you'll receive a poor score on the AP exam (maybe due to some grade inflation), I personally would not take the exam and leave them wondering. If your class performance was mediocre, then I would take the AP exam to show that you at least tried. You should typically take the exam for whatever AP class you're enrolled anyway. Yes, I would assume they'd like to see 5s. That was a stupid question. You won't be automatically rejected if a 4 is on your record. I know people with 2s and no AP scores who still got in (ED of course). Obviously, other things are considered.
