AP exam v. College Credit

If you take a college class (credit and all), is taking the AP exam in that subject (in this case Calc BC and Spanish) a complete waste of 4 hours and $83 or does getting AP scholar awards and having AP scores really help in the admissions process?

Thanks for your advice.

The college credit will cost ~300$ at a state school, but it will be worth it because it'll save you money later on. However, a 5 on the AP exam might test you out of introductory courses.

You should check with the colleges that you are applying to and ask what their policies are on transferring credits. Also, ask about their AP exam policies and how you can earn credit for those.

Between the two of those, you'll get the best answers that you're going to get regarding whether the AP exam is worth anything or not.

I'm not sure how much the AP scholar comes into play, but I'm guessing that the AP score itself means no more than the college credit would.

is it your junior year or senior year.

for your senior year, it obviously doesnt matter.

for junior year, i doubt it will matter, other than for your ego.

Getting the credit can help you by placing you out of certain courses that otherwise you would have to take as a requirement (and pay for). For example, my s will be a freshman in engineering. Chem is a required course and not his favorite subject. He placed out of the course and can now go on to take pHysics which he loves. He has no plans to be a chemE and won't have to take any more chem at all. So $80 was worth it since the chem was 6 credits and he placed out of both sections.

I'm starting my first year of college in a month, and I took eight AP exams between my junior and senior years. I also took three SAT subject tests.

AP has definitely helped me. I earned four credits for SAT Spanish and 30 credits from my Advanced Placement exams. The APs have met more than half of my general education requirements, and, if I want to, I can skip a year of college.

Can someone please answer the question?

As far as ADMISSIONS, if I have the college credits is it worth it to take the AP exams as well?

Let me clarify my answer further, then.

If a school isn't going to take the college credit, then it might not be highly valued in admissions. In their eyes, it might very well be as if you didn't even take the course. For those schools, the AP credit might very well be worth more than the college credit was.

For other schools, your credit might be worth something in the process. Whether it's worth more or less than an AP credit is something that probably depends college by college.
