AP Exams question

Since the AP Exam "season" is here, I'm just wondering how UNC views AP exams. A lot of my teachers say that AP exams are usually just for placement reasons while others say that it factors into the admissions decisions. Do AP exams factor in heavily for admissions at UNC? Or is it more of a placement kind of thing?

Thanks, good luck to everyone else taking ap exams...

placement, but good scores won't hurt :)

Just for reference, here is a list of what scores earn you what credits at UNC: http://www.admissions.unc.edu/academics/placement.htm

Just to clarify, UNC uses AP scores for BOTH placement AND credit. Many schools only use them for placement. By giving you credit you can graduate earlier and save $$ if you need to, and gain upper class standing sooner which helps during registration since registration is done in reverse order with seniors registering first, then juniors etc. This can also help with multiple majors/minors by bypassing some core/into classes and getting into higher level classes sooner.

My S entered with 43 hours AP credit which allowed him to be in upper division classes during his freshman year.

My advice, do well on the AP exams, don't blow them off. Getting an A in an AP class and doing poorly on the exam could be looked on by admissions as having a class that was really NOT an AP level class.

I know that some schools don't accept AP scores from all high schools, as an example Rice University at one time in the last few years would only accept AP Chem scores for credit from one school in Texas because they did a course review and audit and found that all other programs were lacking.
