So I am a sophomore right now and I think I got a 3 on my AP Computer science exam hopefully a 4, but most likely a 3. I want to major in computer science in college, and my GPA for sophomore year right now is about 3.7-3.8. If I do well on my APs next year(apush ap physics and ap Lang) and my gpa stays consistent with all As and 1 B throughout my highschool, will I have any chances to get accepted to schools at least like UCI, or Cal Poly Slo( mostly because their computer science programs are very very good , and Ima prob go in undeclared) my act score is a 32 by the way. Please let me know if I have any chances or not because I am terrified because of my ap score and I really want to major in computer science
AP test scores are not considered in admission decisions only for college credit. Doing well in the AP classes is what is important. At the end of your Junior year, you need to calculate your UC/CSU GPA: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
UCI will use 10-11th grades while SLO will use 9-11th grades in the GPA calculation.
Your ACT is competitive but you want an UC GPA or CP GPA of 4.0+ for the best chances. UCI looks very possible, but SLO is a crapshoot with only a 10% acceptance rate for CS. SLO does not allow you to apply undecided and if you are really interested in CS, you should apply directly for CS at all the schools since it can be very difficult to switch later. Apply broadly since CS is so competitive and make sure you have some solid Match and safety schools on your list.
@Gumbymom I heard cal poly Pomona is pretty good for for computer science too. If I can get a 4.0 GPA unweighted for my Jr year Both semesters, I can end my soph-Jr GPA as a 3.9 GPA unweighted. If I do so are my chances high to apply for CS/undeclared for the UC’s? My top choices are prob Cal Poly SLO but because of my very poor freshman grades I may be considering UCI, UCSD, and prob UCLA. I’d rather choose UCI because of its many positive feedback on its computer science program. But I’m scared because if I go in as a CS major, I may be looked over because it is so competitive. Thank you!
You would have a better shot at Cal Poly Pomona than SLO, but for both campuses, CS is impacted and competitive. Always best to apply to a variety of schools since there are no guarantees when it comes to competitive majors. Also UC’s are very GPA focused and if you check some of the decision threads for this year especially, many outstanding applicants with 4.0 GPA’s and high test scores that were denied. Just keep your options open and also consider applying to SJSU which also has an excellent CS program.
