ap exams

sorry.. this has probably been asked already...

but will i have any use for the AP Government & politics exam if i pass

& will berkeley care if i take it or not?

you'll get 2.5 empty units which help your telebears standing. That is about it. The only APs that really get you anything are Calculus and English.

yea can someone please explain how this telebears standing thing works and its relation to aps?

oh wow ok, thanks

heres a good link i found on ap credit breakdown (only for college of L & S)

Advanced Placement Examinations

hope it helps!

can someone please explain how this telebears standing thing works and its relation to aps? pleeasssee!!!!! thanks

If you score well on AP exams, you have more units. The more units you have, the higher standing you have (eg. sophomore standing, etc.). Telebears gives freshman last priority and so having a higher standing will help you when it comes to picking classes and whatnot.

The idea that "APs don't help you other than in registration standing" seems to be moronic. I will probably be able to graduate in 5 or 6 semesters with AP credits filling most of my elective requirements.

^are you L&S? If so, AP credit really is pretty much useless.
The general rule is you don't use AP credit for your major, because grad schools and med schools don't like it when people do that.

My department doesn't even accept AP credit for its graduation requirements, but it only requires 5 lower and 7 upper division courses. That's only 48 units or a little more than 3 semesters.

thats how most majors are.

So why would AP credit be useless? You take your major classes and whatever remaining breadth requirements you have that you didn't fulfill with your major at Cal and use APs for elective credit.

I passed 12 APs, and besides starting as a sophomore in units (and clearing out my foreign language, etc. requirements), they have been pretty much useless.

The only ones that helped were AP Calc BC, AP English Lang/Lit, AP Foreign Language in terms of fulfilling requirements.

By the way, you CANNOT use your APs to fulfill breadth requirements.

Just the basic 120 unit requirement. Should help with that.

but for med schools, you can use APs to pass out of classes like Bio 1A and take 1b straight right? also, you can move over the basic chem? also, take Math 53 instead of 1b? what do you guys think in terms of med school?

Med schools don't look kindly on AP credit in lieu of their pre-req courses. That is, they would want to see Bio 1A, Math 16A or 1A, and not the equivalent AP credit.

For example, UC Davis Med School admissions site has this:

AP/CLEP credit is not acceptable for prerequisite courses.

Santabanta

Even tho the APs may not provide much direct value, think of them in this way:

1 - they helped get you into Cal (worth it just on this basis alone)

2 - they prepared you for the weeder courses like Chem 1A, Chem 3A, and Bio 1A since you already mastered the basic material. You can focus on the nuances and on getting that very valuable A.

3 - they give you advanced standing which counts for telebears appointment times (in granularity of logical 'years', but it might pull you one or two semesters ahead in gaining each priority level

4 - they can be quite useful in a narrow sense. AP US History waives the American History and Cultures requirement of L&S, although other means exist to waive it. AP English Lit and Composition can waive you from the writing requirement and with a 5 even waive the two R&C rquirements of L&S.

so no successful med school applicant passes over these lower div courses and jumps straight to math 53, bio 1b?
the lower div courses are weeder courses and are of material i have already covered (more chance of getting bored)...
i hate how complicated this is

I think it's rare for pre-meds to jump straight to math 53. I personally would not jump straight to math 53 even if 1B is the "weeder." By the way, AP Calculus BC is super easy compared to 53.
