ap french and ap spanish simultaneously? looks good? college admissions questions!!!!

<p>I have an important question.</p>

<p>I really want to go to Middlebury - it has an amazing language program. I myself at this point am quadrilingual, and absolutely obsessed with languages. I speak English, Russian, French and Spanish.</p>

<p>I started out in high school with Spanish and French I, then realized my passion only afterwards. In sophomore year, I went to French 2 and Spanish 2, however my Spanish teacher decided to bump me up to Spanish 3. Coherently, my French teacher did the same, however in a different fashion, deciding to bump me up from 2 to 5. Confusingly enough, my Spanish 3 teacher recommended me for Spanish 5 - French 5 and Spanish 5 are both AP language classes at my school.</p>

<p>How does this look. Is this unique? Rare? Does this give me an edge? Is there a lot of competition amongst college applicants with these qualifications?</p>

<p>At this point, my grades aren't marvelous - 9th grade GPA = 3.2, and 10th grade GPA = 3.5. I'm being extremely optimistic this year, and hoping for a 4.83 (my maximum capacity). If I get straight A's this year and next (senior year), my overall GPA will bump up to 4.2, granting me the title of Valedictorian. I'm shooting high, but what the heck.</p>

<p>I also play the piano, professionally. I'm Russian, as is my 75 year old instructor (who is incredibly brilliant), hence, she isn't very aware of American music proficiency programs - I don't really have much to show colleges unless I just make a video tape of my playing and/or creating a recording. </p>

<p>SO.... if all goes well, can I get into Middlebury? Even a better school, an Ivy League? Or am I being ridiculous.... Keep in mind, if i get ALL A'S FROM THIS POINT, my GPA will be a 4.2something MAX.</p>

<p>Are the 2 AP languages really that amazing? Or am I just giving myself false confidence.
Should I find a way to exhibit my Russian proficiency? I'm taking the SAT in Oct, we'll see that goes. I'll take it more times if something goes wrong.</p>

In tenth grade, there was a ridiculous girl who sat next to me in English 2 Honors who cheated off of me... twice. We both got caught... long story short I got drop/failed from the class 2nd semester, and there is a WF on my transcript (it doesn't go into my GPA, they made it 0/0 credits) - I retook the class at Laurel Springs, called "honors british literature", got an A, they gave me a 5.A. Is that WF horrible? What if I explain it my essay.. is it still bad?</p>

<p>And also, for Precalc and Chem, do you recommend I take community college classes? or laurel springs? or john hopkins CTY... john and laurel both can give me 5.As... which is very important, I think...</p>

<p>Also, I will take the SAT II in Spanish and French (with listening).</p>

<p>How much can my counselor help me? What do I do? How do I maximize chances? Is my rigor enough? Or is not having Engh and Geom h and alg2h ruin things....</p>

<p>Two AP languages are great and unique. Is it going to get you into Midd? Unfortunately, I doubt it. The two not great years, the C, bumping down in class rigor–that will probably put you out of the running. Midd is extremely competitive. The good news? Many schools have great language programs.</p>

A reporter from the Burlington (VT) Free Press sat in on an admissions committee discussion at Middlebury, and wrote this article:

<p>To me, the most depressing part of the article was the reporter’s impression that extracurriculars don’t seem to count. The admissions officers seemed most interested in grades and SAT scores.</p>

<p>Some excerpts:</p>

<p>“Applicants the committee tended to endorse quickly were mostly academic titans. They were often in the top 5 percent of their class, with all or almost all A’s in the most difficult courses available at their schools, and near perfect SAT or ACT scores. The admitted applicants often listed numerous extracurricular activities, although the impact these had on the decision-making process was unclear to this reporter.”</p>

<p>And:</p>

<p>"The committee grew excited about one applicant’s internship with a public health organization and the recommendation that she received from a scientist there. This – coupled with the student’s interest in majoring in science at a time when Middlebury is trying harder to recruit future scientists – seemed to help erase a few B’s from the applicant’s transcript in the eyes of the committee. They recommended her for February admission.</p>

<p>In other cases, extracurriculars did not help. A student’s four years on the school newspaper did not cancel out the C he received in pre-calculus or the drop in his GPA after the first semester of his senior year. He was rejected.</p>

<p>Another applicant had an 800 on the SAT critical reading, 700s on the SAT math and writing, and captainship of the varsity soccer team to her credit; but she, too, had a C on her transcript, and her GPA was only in the high 3’s, raising suspicions of slacking.</p>

<p>Someone with such great SATs should be closer to a 4.0 GPA, one committee member suggested. As for her soccer playing? It was viewed as ho-hum – there was no indication she’d taken the initiative to contact coaches at the school, nor was she a recruited athlete. The committee recommended that she be rejected, and then went on to waitlist a 3.97 GPA cello player who had not sent a recording of her cello playing to the music department."</p>

<p>Yet this student was accepted:</p>

<p>"The committee’s longest discussion was about a math genius with weak social skills. The young man’s tests scores were impressive – a perfect 800 on the math SAT II and scores nearly as high on verbals. He’d earned straight A’s in his school’s most challenging math and science courses and dominated math competitions with outstandingly good computation skills.</p>

<p>However, there were problems in his file. The boy had flunked at least one class and consistently drew low ratings on PQs – personal qualities. A school recommendation suggested that the student might need support, socially. An alumni interviewer noted that the boy came across as unenthusiastic during their meeting. "

<p>I don’t know…it depends on your school profile. My son has several classmates who went to M’bury last year, however…he attends a private college prep bs. One of his friends had a 3.6 gpa (school does not weight grades) and just a couple of AP’s. The schools profile ranks very high with colleges though as all courses are extremely rigorous.</p>
