AP French Lanuage

I'm a junior this year and i'll most likely be taking the AP French Language exam this may. I've had only four years of french when most have like five or six, so I am kind of nervous. I just want to know if anyone has any suggestions/comments about the exam. What prep book should I use, I ordered Barron's because my teacher told me to (it's kind of the only one geared toward the AP). Are there any other books that are helpful when preparing for the exam? Thanks alot!

I haven't taken it either but I heard that it has a lot of colloquial content which would make it super hard for non-native speakers. If it's anything like the Chinese test, that might be true but I'm not sure.

Good luck! (I might be taking it, too)

Have you had AP French yet?

no, I havent had AP yet... I went from French III to AP French, skipping French IV Honors... this was due to a schedule conflict... I was originally going to self study French IV in the AP class, but my teacher recommened that I just go with the AP class and take the exam if I feel comfortable. I am pretty much willing to catch up, do all the work, and learn all the stuff but I am not sure if my teacher will actually teach it or not b/c there there are only three kids in the class. So, all in all I am pretty nervous... so I am came here!

I don't know how it's taught at your school, but French IV at mine doesn't really matter. We went over a lot more historical stuff, did some more reading/speaking, but it wasn't nearly as loaded a course as III. You've pretty much got all you need by the end of III, everything else is refining and reviewing.

And, I'm sorry, I totally misunderstood you. I thought you meant SATII in French for some reason, not the AP test. Ack. Blame the time, it's messing with my head.

Anyway, the AP test for French was basically reading, listening, essay, speaking, verb fill-ins, and a function word fill-in. (I think that's what it was called, at least) The sections you'll probably need to practice most with are the function words and the speaking and I definitely suggest getting help from your teacher (if you don't have the course) in those. You need to be coached for the speaking throughout the year and the function words come with practice. Everything else is basic.

If you want, I'll see if I can find the review book we used, can't think of the name off the top of my head...

Thanks alot! Yea... my teacher said that French IV is really not that important... but I will have to catch up on some verb tenses (subjective, passe simple, plus que parfait, etc...), which I could do pretty quickly.

Haha... I doubt that I will take the French SAT II... its really hard... I have the real SAT II book and the stuff on it is pretty complicated in comparison to the stuff i've seen so far on the AP. Good luck if you're taking it!

Ah, ok, our levels don't quite match up, then. We went through all those tenses in third year. That was a pretty hectic year...I think we did Pqp and past conditional two days before midterms.

Subjective is evil, though. At least it was when I was first trying to learn it. Those were some bad memories.

Ehhh...I'm thinking about taking the SATII but I've heard the same, that it's hard. I might just opt for something easier, like US History, to fill up that 3rd gap. I got a 4 in AP French and the 5 in APUSH.

Oh, and I wouldn't worry about age, either. I was a junior when I took the AP French exam and beat out all the seniors except one, including the saludictorian. xD

" I went from French III to AP French, skipping French IV Honors"

You didn't skip anything...the 4th year of the language should be the AP course....unless your school system is screwed.

glucose: actually, my school goes 1st year, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and then AP. But it is kind of messed up in a way since most people don't even get to AP or they only get to it senior year.

Languages are sequenced in the same way at my school, with AP French being the fifth year of instruction. It's annoying because our district only offers spanish in middle school, so the only people who can take AP French are those who transfer from another district.

Transferring from Canada also works. I didn't really know much but bumbled my way through the test and passed out of 1st year French in 7th grade. I took year 2 in 8th grade, 3 as a freshman, etc. until I finished last year's AP. Was gonna dual enroll this year but schedule self-destructed so....that didn't work out. :P

my school is a 7-12 high school and does it like this....

7th - French 7
8th - French 8
9th - French II
10th - French III
11th - French IV Hrns
12th - AP French/French V

Taking french in 7th and 8th grade allows you to go straight to french II when entering high school
