On behalf of the native French kids, I’d just like to say sorry for ruining the curve. BUT…even without us, I doubt that there would be a drastic change in exam scores. Some natives grew up in the US, and they can speak (slang) REALLY well…as for reading classical lit or writing a coherent essay (a difficult task even in English)…not so much. Then again, non-natives like Pi and Matt get 5s, so it’s not impossible.

How are science and mathematics results AT ALL relevant to foreign language results?!

You know, if you lived in Montreal (a French-speaking city) for a year, I don’t see how you’re not native (though I imagine your skills probably eroded somewhat). Still, congratulations on being a 5! I’m curious to see the non-native grade distributions to see how many non-native 5’s there were for 2010 (I, very surprisingly, am one as well :)).

^ En fait, j’ai continue a poursuivre mes etudes en francophonie, meme apres que j’ai quitte Montreal. Connais-tu le diplome DALF C2? Je l’ai obtenu il y a seulement deux ans. :)

The AP French exam was a piece of cake compared to that o.o I remember I had to read 3 long articles about genetically modified organisms, write a 1,000 word essay supporting my point of view on the topic, and then the oral part… dies Let’s just say I’m glad I passed That exam is not for the faint of heart; it’s intended for native speakers (and a lot of natives fail it too).

So is it like *le bac/i that the French take at the end of high school? Or is the DALF even harder?

I thought the AP French test was challenging, but not overly difficult. I took French for 7 years (6th-12th grade, which is standard and pretty much required to take AP French in 11th or 12th grade).
I got a 5 on the test, and most kids in the class at my school receive 4s or 5s. To be fair, though, it was a very rigorous class. We did lots of in-class essays, we had a graded oral exam every few weeks, we did lots of listening tests, and had heavy reading assignments. I guess I was better prepared for the test than most people were, because it was exactly how I expected it to be.
