i'm debating whether or not i want to take the AP French in may. it depends mostly on if wellesley offers placement/credit/waives prerequistites for a high score. i already took the SAT French and scored well above 700...does wellesley also use SAT language tests for placement?

Yes, if you take an SAT II language and score a 690+ or get a certain score on an AP/IB exam, you can place out of the language requirement.

Wellesley also accepts AP/IB scores for certain subjects. AP/IBs are generally used to advance to higher levels of classes; you are only allowed to earn up to 4 credits towards graduation pre-matriculation.
Exact information/scores are here: http://www.wellesley.edu/Registrar/APfall06.pdf

thanks for the site!

so are SAT language scores used for advancing to higher level classes as well?

Yes, you can do that as well, but while a certain score can fulfill the language requirement, language placement is based on placement exams given by the specific departments during orientation week.

French may be the only foreign language departments at Wellesley that allows College Board (both SAT and AP) tests in place of any actual placement exam.

I used my score (which was also well above 700) to take FREN 211 my first semester (Fall 04), and did not take any placement exam. I had scored a 4 on the AP French exam which doesn’t get you placement any more, but got you both placement and credit when I was a first-year. You would not get any sort of credit for the SATs.

I also did take the Spanish placement exam, and my impression of it is that if you scored above 700 on a foreign language SAT, you would probably do just fine on the placement exam for that language.
