AP Gov free response

2002 free response question- why is voter turnout higher in presidential elections than mid-term ones?

Help, i cant think of any reasons

Well that's pretty obvious, more people prefer to vote for president because it's more important and obviously if your thee your also going to vote for your governor, senator, and other legislator.

One reason is that presidential candidates receive far, far more media coverage than individual Congresspeople. Media coverage = name recognition = votes. For the same reason (and others), incumbents (whose names have been circulating throughout the media since they were first elected) usually get more votes then their challengers.
