I am an incoming junior in high school. For my courses next year, I am taking two APs (AP Calc BC & AP Psychology) I am also able to take AP Language and Composition. If I plan to go to college for science/biology, do I still need to take AP Lang? I know colleges like to see many APs, but is it still applicable if it’s not even related to the field I am interested in?
side note: for freshman and sophomore years I took Honors English, and I did decently in them, but I really am not interested in English at all.
Any advice is appreciated! Thank you
If you plan on a STEM type degree, those kinds of APs are nice for credit so you can discharge some gen eds. If you are just an all round strong student and think you can get a 4 or more, take it. You don’t have to like it. If you can tolerate AP Psych, I expect you can tolerate AP english lang and lit.
I would suggest to not to get too greedy - focus = greater chance of success. So less course = more time to study for each course = likely chance for higher marks. so it’s not about how many AP courses you take, but how good the marks you end up getting. 10x1 < 3x5
Yes.
While you should not take more AP’s than you can handle, if you feel you can handle another, AP Lang is a good one to have. In addition to being an AP, it will help you to become a better writer, which will be invaluable the following year when you need to write application essays for college admissions.
In addition to potentially getting college credit, many colleges have a writing requirement for graduation, so AP Lang will at least give you a head start. Good luck.
