I am going to be a freshman.
I am taking APUSH in school, and self studying AP Chinese ( native), AP Human Geography and AP PSychology. I chose HG and Psychology because I heard they were easy and I like the course content as well.

Please give me advices and suggestions or opinoins as I am a novice.
Thank you

Others on CC may disagree with me as a lot of them took many APs when they were freshmen, but I think you may be (depending on the kind of person you are) overloading yourself. Now I could see anyone reasonably doing that schedule,. especially being a native of a language, but you definitely have to be aware that it will consume quite a bit of extra time outside of class.

There are people on here that can read a review book for AP Psych and Human Geo the night before and get a 5, but that isn’t very likely to happen for many people. So you just have to make sure you’re ready to dedicate as much time to it as you need to. APUSH is a pretty rigorous AP (or it should be if you have a good teacher lol) so just be aware of everything this entails for you before you register for these tests. It may take you a day to study or it could take a month or more depending on what kind of person you are. I wish you the best of luck.

blindtrombonist, thank you for your advices. I have a 4.0 GPA, i never study for any quizzes, tests for school, i spend less than 1 hr a wk on school work. I think right now school is way to easy, I go to gym 3 hrs a day and movie theaters during the final exam week when all my friends are studying and I get better results than them as well. I run cross country in school, i play football- runningback, i day dream a lot…

I think i have too much time and that’s why i want to challenge myself
I did my 4 year plan and plan to use freshman year’s 4 aps as a warmup.

This is some basic information about myself and I will do my best next year.

mukubird, don’t do it, i don’t mean to be rude, but i don’t think you have the maturity level or dedication to do it based on your comment. trust me, middle school is a lot different from high school, and you’re going to have to make sacrifices (ex. no more movies during final week), take one ap if you want but seriously, don’t overdo it. i’m saying it because i don’t want you to overconfidently take 5 and end up getting low scores because you didn’t study. get acclimatized to the high school setting first.

Please don’t overload yourself your freshman year with all these AP courses. To start things off, high school is a HUGE transition all on its own - academics, extracurriculars, social life, etc. It’s so much different. Even though you might not have study now, most high school courses involve a degree of studying and effort, so overloading yourself on AP courses right now may not be the best option. I am not saying that you are not capable of succeeding in each one of these AP courses, but please take it a word of advice coming from someone who passed all 12 AP exams taken.

my freshman year, i took AP human geography - best course to take as a freshman. It provided a good challenge, but wasn’t too difficult either. AP USH is a VERY intense course. Luckily, I loved it and found it easy, but I have heard it’s probably one of the hardest.

Whatever you do, I wish you the best of luck; but please remember to take it slow and then build up on your AP courses. Welcome to the AP jungle!

Hahaha, everyone heres telling you not to do it. I say do it. Guys, let him do it. Its not me whos gonna suffer early

BTW i agree w/sd6 the most. I was like you in middle school. Ranked 1st in the class but didn’t even carry a backpack. And I think this was the reason when I took 2 APs in freshman year, I realized I lacked much dedications and discipline to keep it up. I barely got 5s in both but it was close; if i didn’t realize i was screwed 2weeks b4 the test, I wouldv failed.

All in all, do as you like. You will regret it though fo sho.

I would say, go for it. I have just graduated, I took a total of 11 APs, but I wish I took more my freshman and sophmore year.

From what I’ve heard from most people (on here and in school) Psych and Human Geo are easy.

I would have to disagree with most people. APs, do not take that much time, you will not have to sacrifice a whole lot. I breezed through highschool without studying for a single test (except for the 9 APs I self-studied). What brought my GPA down was not tests, but homework, which I did only if I thought it would not help me learn. If you spend a total of an hour each night on HG and Psych, for 1 semester, you should be able to do well on the exams. Obviously Chinese will not be a problem. and APUSH you will be taking a class in, so do whatever that class demands, and then an intense couple of review days before the AP test.

The two APs that I took a class in (calc AB and Calc BC) I didn’t even have to study before the AP exam. If the class prepares you well you should not have too much trouble.

However, If you are taking an AP just to take an AP, instead of to learn an then be tested on your abilities, I would suggest you not do this. I did this for Stats and US gov, and I found it very difficult to focus, b/c I didn’t like the material.

i have a feeling this guys a ■■■■■…
“yeah i go to the movies during final weeks” “ill use the 4 aps as a warmup”
and isnt football season and cross country during the same season?
suspicious…

socalsoccerdude, Football season and cross country are both during the fall indeed, but my cross country coach is a nice guy and he allows me to skip most practices and show up only on the meets, since i do a lot of workout on my on anyway. I am sorry if i made you uncomfortable with my comments, lol.
going to movies during final week, probably not again next year. it was just to see how much i could remember through teacher’s lectures.
as for maturity level, yeh my last comment sounded so childish, but i don’t think i am that immature. I already got a rea book for APUSH and i am also going to order a AMSCO- following the experienced ones’ advice. And, some one mentioned a big difference between middle school and high school. IDK, i took spanish+french lv2, algebra2, all gt classes and aced them easily. I am alos the school’s SGA president. Please comment again and I promise you that all my comments about myself are true.

if you feel you are upto the challenge go for it. It will be tough in the beginning but if you study hard and stay concentrated then you’ll probably be fine.
It feels like a bit too much for freshman year, but its up to you.

For one thing, dude, football is a lot different if you’re planning to play in high school. Depending on your team, there might be year around training + 2 weeks of 8 or 9 hour training camp. Now, freshman football is not usually all taht intense, but if you’re planning to play in 10th grade chances are your training will start a month or so after the season endsm so I suggest at least waiting a few months before self studyin APs to make sure you can handle it all.

mukubird
i think you should self-study one ap and take apush
2 aps freshman year is more than enough
and you would be wanting to be experiencing more ECs and finding your place in high school rather than studying
and sports take up a LOT of time

Mukubird, take the class for APUSH and then get accustomed to high school, make sure you’re in EC’s that you really enjoy, etc., and then make the decision to self-study some after a few months (but not too late). if you feel that you can handle it, then go for it but i wouldn’t recommend 4. take advantage of this summer to get a jump start on APUSH and other APs, but be warned.

if ur legit, then heres my advice. dont take the exams. from what ive been hearing, if you take ap exams during ur freshman year, they dont count towards college credit. this is what my teachers had told me. its only your freshman year and its consider the time of high school where there isnt that much pressure on you to do that well academically. colleges dont look into freshman year courses that well. instead of taking those ap exams, use your time to do something in the EC field that can make your resume look good. take time to do better in football and cross country or volunteer at a hospital. taking 4 self studied ap exams is probably too much for u, plus they wont even count towards ur college credit, so ull be wasting time and money for nothing. remember, ur only a freshman, so dont use all the free time for ap stuff. ive seen kids get into really good colleges without taking AP exams during their freshman year.

I took AP Human Geo freshman year and I’m actually a sophomore in high school this fall. I also played a varsity sport, so I was stressed at times. I had to read a lot for the class and I am thinking I got a 3 on the exam. There is a lot of vocab and etc. I wouldn’t recommend taking another AP class or to self study for that matter. I was also in all honors classes and AP wasn’t the hardest class for me. Math was, lol. I’m taking just AP World History next year, but I don’t have much room in my schedule. I could have taken AP Arts History too, but I didn’t have room in the sche. I have to take a langauage and I didn’t have room freshman year and I am also in Drama. I only get two electives and have mostly required classes. It may be different at your school though, but I would just take 1 AP class freshman year and build on that. I know lots of kids who took Honors Geo and they are taking AP 10th grade with me. I wouldn’t have done it, because now I have a leg up on the other kids and I know what to expect in AP World.

this is bull. i’ve spent 30 grand for 4 years to go to my private high school-middle school joint, and we aren’t allowed to do AP’s until 11th grade >_>
