AP Lang During My Sophomore Year?

Good Afternoon,

I’m currently a freshman signing up for my classes next year. This year I have done 1 semester of English at a local college and got an A, and I’m currently on the second semester.

At my school one semester of college class equals a whole years worth of highschool English. Now, I have to option to either take English 2 Honors or AP Lang next year.

As of now, I’m thinking of doing AP Lang during sophmore year. Then, taking AP Lit my senior year since my schedule would be a bit difficult during my junior year.

The only thing stopping me from making this decision, is that I’m afraid I’ll do poorly on the exam. How hard is it? Would colleges prefer me taking this opportunity or should I stick to the regular schedule.
(I’m looking to become something in science/math)

Thanks for reading, I’d love to hear everyone’s input.

Hello, I’m a sophomore that hasn’t taken Lang yet so I’m not sure how helpful my response will be. However, if you want to do something in science and math, I would recommend maybe taking English 2 Honors. I’ve heard that taking Lang is more useful during junior or senior year because it will help you a lot with essay writing when you get closer to that. On top of that, getting the credit may be helpful but if you want to do something in science and math and aren’t sure how well you’ll do on the lang test, it’s probably more important to take more advanced math or science classes and devote more focus to that.

Take a look at your target schools and see what they require for high school English. Many of them require 4 years, so it wouldn’t make sense to take AP Lang now. It helps to be taking AP Lang before or during when you take the SAT, so take that into consideration also.

@Trixy34 After completing this year, I would already have done 2 years of English. One semester of college= 1 year of high school English

I mean the colleges that you want to attend. Many will want to see you taking 4 years of English. They won’t care that you’ve fulfilled your high school’s requirements

It doesn’t matter if you do poorly on the AP exam…AP test results are not used for admissions, just for credit/placement. You will already have college English credits. But it makes me wonder why you are worried about AP Lang as a sophomore…then just take the usual honors Soph English.

@bopper Thank you for your input. I was considering taking it sophomore despite being somewhat worried because I know that if I leave it until my junior Year, I will stress out even more. My schedule for junior Year is quite rigorous and if I add an AP class such as Lang, my grades might suffer.
