AP lang frown upon 5 paragraph essays?

Is it generally a bad idea to write a GENERIC 5 paragraph essay (& thesis)? Is it true that it is almost impossible to get a 7+ if you do so?

Like a great essay written like:
The author uses diction, imagery, and repetition to convey his point of...
para 1: diction can be seen in lines...
para 2: imagery is utilized in lines...
para 3: repetition can be found...
conclusion:...

My teacher says that this way of organizing is bad in AP lang. Is she right?

To your question, not really. Language and content (to a lesser degree) is much more important than your structure.

No, standard format 5 paragraph essays won’t necessarily lower your score.

However, an AP English teacher I know does give the same advice. It’s not that the AP graders hate that format; it’s that a cookie-cutter format encourages you to write a cookie-cutter essay, and that will get you graded down.

“The author uses diction…”

Doesn’t every author? ;)
