Hi! I am filling out the next year classes registration
and still am debating whether to take AP Lang or AP Lit. for my senior year.

Things that might be crucial?:
I came to US about a few years ago, so English isn't my strong area.
But, I didn't do ESL. Have A in english right now.
Also, my possible majors are mostly in the area of science.

The reason why I wanted to take AP in english is that I just want to challenge myself!
not just to increase number of AP classes I took...

So, what's the difference between two classes?
like which one does more reading or writing? Which seems harder for me?

I am a junior and currently taking AP Lang right now. In our school, one of the prerequisites to get into an AP Lit class is successful completion of AP Lang. Therefore, AP Lit is exclusive for seniors who have taken AP Lang junior year. (Let me say it again; this is only for my school!)

But no way do I mean AP Lang is easier than AP Lit. AP Lang is more about writing style–why has the writer chosen this word instead of that? How does the writer convey his/her tone? What does the writing style have to do with his/her message? In this class, no matter what school you go to or what teacher you have, you will be expected to write a lot of essays. And yes, there is reading comprehension component in the AP Lang test, but it tests more on the writer’s writing style and word usage.

On the other hand, AP Lit is more about reading comprehension and getting the message through. You will have to deal a lot more with British literature as opposed to mostly contemporary writing for AP Lang (essays, in most cases). And yes you will write essays, poems, epics, etc., but less emphasis will be put on style.

I say if you want to challenge yourself and become better at the language, take the AP Lang course. I’ve seen many second-language speakers read and understand passages pretty clearly but write not that well…
