AP Lang or USH?

I have the choice of AP lang or APUSH for next year. I am in 10th grade and currently have an A in Honors Modern World History and an A- in Honors English. My teacher for english right now teaches lang and im not really sure what its like, i will try to find connections to ask upper classmen at my school what the teachers are like.

Any experience with USH or Lang and does anyone find one to be particularly easier for some reason?

AP US is universally book-heavy, aside from that there’s not much I can say because it varies from school to school.

As English is probably the versatile subject when it comes to how to teach it, it really depends on the teacher and only your upperclassmen can give you a reliable answer.

@QuadMaster Yea i’ve heard that. Thanks

I’m a history person so I found USH pretty easy… Lang test was easy but my English teacher was a tough grader so even though I got an easy 5 on the test the class itself was hard, but that totally depends on who is teaching it at your school. In general regardless of teacher USH should be easy… Most teachers use the American Pageant so it’s exactly the same content everywhere.

However, if you have A’s in both classes, why not take both APs?

@ssswims I had a feeling someone might say that. I just wanted to do one my junior year. I also don’t want to have both in the same semester (block scheduling) and get used to my first AP. Do you go to a public school ssswims?

AP lang should be junior year. Then take AP lit senior year.
APUSH is fine sophomore year even though it’s usually taken by juniors

@jimmyboy23 Yea at my school it is Lang for 11th and Lit for 12th. At my school AP Euro was 10th grade (only one class period for it though) and APUSH in 11th. In 11th a lot more kids go from honors to AP whereas in my middle school that was 9th grade they recommended very few kids for the 10th grade AP course.

BTW our high school only allowed you to be in AP Euro in 10th, unless you are in a very high math class or go ahead, etc. That was the only AP class possible technically.

Yes I do! AP Lang and USH are usually both junior year. AP lit is the snr yr course

@ssswims Cool me too. What state? I’m from Pennsylvania just an hour north of Philadelphia

It varies so much from school to school, but AP Lang is my lowest grade right now, and I find it a lot easier than APUSH content-wise. My teacher’s tests and quizzes are just so specific…

Why can’t you take both?

@glasshours‌ I just want to get used to one for now i guess. Maybe i would, im not sure if i am even going to get recommended. My teachers might just recommend me for honors, and i probably will not be able to push for the higher class. My social studies also is A LOT easier than some of my friends. We have had one test and a few quizzes here and there and we havent even done anything different from my teacher’s academic/regular class. Also in advanced social studies last year (still middle school in 9th grade for us) i had a C+ the first marking period and B’s for the rest of the year. It was pretty hard to me but i didnt really try all that much and also in the spring i missed 2 weeks of school due to personal problems and it took me a while to get back to my classes so that was definitely a setback.

For example, all of the honors grade 10 students were supposed to read a book called “King Leopold’s Ghost” but our teacher was like yea we arent doing that and it was pretty weird since i think that book mightve been the one thing telling me like ‘this class isnt for you’ or like the one complex reading for honors but nope.

Sorry for the long reply lol

I feel that AP Lang would actually be more useful in your life than APUSH.

What do you mainly do in Lang? In the program of studies for my district it says like different types of complex writing pretty much is a summary of it.

Anyone who took it that can give me their experience with it? @Kawaiiii @glasshours @ssswims

In class, we just read books and take tests/quizzes. We’ve written a few essays, and our teacher is pretty harsh with grading those (I got an 88, and that was one of the highest grades). My teacher’s tests are also REALLY specific - you have to read the book multiple times just to get over a 90. /: It’s definitely more intense than any other English class I’ve taken, but nothing too bad if you’re decent at writing and effectively conveying your thoughts on paper. Not sure if this is just my school, because I’ve heard from friends from other schools that Lang is cakewalk.

@glasshours‌ Hmm. Ok thanks a lot!

I think Lang will be a lot more useful in the long run. I’m learning skills in that class that can be applied to every other class I’m taking.

Well Lang will be a very “specific” class. We learned a lot about grammar, took many grammar tests and quizzes. I did decently on them, but you had to really know the stuff to do well. Gerunds, partitives, commas, etc. Had a vocab quiz like every other class(good for SAT too). It also really helped me for the ACT. Only read one book and we wrote about 5-6 papers, including a 12 page synthesis research paper. I got a 95 on that assignment! I ended up getting a 4 on the AP Lang exam.

@Ctesiphon Oh that’s interesting. How much homework would you say you get each night?

@rumorsareflying Yea i could see that.

Thanks guys!

Lang Lang Lang
AP US was a nightmare. AP Lang was challenging, but not as ridiculous as AP US and you learn not just about english, but how to construct a convincing argument and closely analyze texts (useful in any discipline).

Both are pretty good choices, but I personally recommend APUSH.

If you pass the exam, and take AP Gov and pass the exam for that, you can knock out the Social Science requirements for your GE courses (depending on whether your major only requires 2 courses like mine did).

However, with AP Lang, you can skip out on one or two classes for your freshman year of college, depending on the score you get.

Either way, it’s up to you. If possible, try to take both. If not, I personally recommend APUSH, followed by AP Gov.
