Do you think AP Lang was worth all the work? I’m going to be a senior and these are classes I’m definitely planning on taking:
Band (Marching included)
AP Physics
AP Bio
AP Calc bc
Anatomy
Do you all think Lang is worth the effort or manageable within these classes? I enjoy reading but not particularly taking English in school. I want to look the best I can for volley however, even if I’m looking to major in engineering.
I meant to say best I can for college. I don’t know how it changed to that
I’d be more worried about the work involved with taking 3 science courses at the same time. Are you sure you can handle physics, biology, and anatomy all at the same time? Maybe you could consider leaving one for senior year? And for Calculus, do you have classes after BC that you can take? If not, it’s a bad idea to take a “gap year” of Calculus. Assuming you haven’t already done AB, I would drop that with the intention of coming back to it senior year and take an easier math course in order to lighten your load.
However, if you’re determined to keep your schedule, then just take regular english. Personally, I have a soft spot for AP Lang, so I would recommend it, but in reality, engineering schools won’t care too much if you have it on your transcript.
I’m not sure how your school’s classes are laid out, or what the word is on your English teachers, but at mine, AP Lang wasn’t very difficult and there certainly wasn’t a huge workload (we read around 3 books the whole year, I think, and wrote like 5 essays). It took up a very small amount of my time and rarely demanded more work than any of my other classes (only time it did was when a big essay was due that I hadn’t yet started, or when we had to read). You do seem to have a lot going on, schedule-wise (far more than I did), but if your course load reflects your intelligence/study ability/determination, I’d think you’d be fine adding AP Lang to it.
AP Language mostly just cements the reading and essay writing skills you’ve already learned in other English classes throughout your high school career (it’s the equivalent of a basic college-entry level composition class), so if you can take it, it’s decent college prep (of course, this depends a LOT on your teacher and the material they use), but it’s probably worth the risk.
Additionally, I know that lots of people who know they’ll be majoring in science/math/etc (i.e-not English) are able to knock a GE English course off by scoring well on the AP Lang exam–I’ve heard this is specifically helpful for engineering majors, they can focus more on the stuff that’s really going to help them with their major. Just something to consider.
Honestly though, even if it is easy, I wouldn’t recomend taking something you really don’t want to, especially if it’ll detract you from all the science and math you’ve already got going. Not wanting to do something, or not enjoying it at all will make it far more difficult than it really is.
Good luck with everything!
Most colleges require 4 years of English, so even if you don’t take AP Lang you would have to take an english course.
I would recommend you take AP Lang. I didn’t take the class but I took the exam only having taken regular 11th grade english and got a 5. It’s a very straightforward exam that just tests your writing skills.
