Hi CC, I’m currently a freshman in high school and will be taking Spanish 3 next year. However, I’m not interested in Spanish at all so I’m planning on stopping after the 3rd year to meet the graduation requirement. But, the one language I am motivated about learning is Japanese. I’ve been learning it in my free time since 7th grade and can probably get a 5 on the AP. Would prestigious colleges be ok with this and still recognize it as taking an AP Language? Thanks in advance! (not sure if I mentioned it earlier, but my school doesn’t offer Japanese)
FWIW, from my own experience: after my sophomore year, I asked several colleges that have a 4 year recommendation if my preparation at the time was sufficient (2 years HS Spanish + 0 years HS Italian + 5 on the AP Italian exam as a non-native speaker) and they all said it was fine. In the end, I did end up taking a 3rd year of Spanish. Still, I was very happy with my admissions results. So I think you will be fine if, and this is a big if, you actually get a 5 on the AP Japanese exam. However if you still have doubts, ask the colleges that you are targeting.
