Hello Everyone.

My school offers AP Lang and Composition for juniors. Next year I’ll be a junior and I am confused as to whether I should take it or not. Right now I am in Honors English and my grade is quite okay (B+ to A-). My teacher has told us that as long as we maintain a B, she’ll recommend us, so that’s not a problem. However, I came from another country and I feel that my writing is not good enough. I am worried that I won’t do as well in AP and I want to know whether AP will actually help me become a better writer. Also, my critical reading is a bit weak. How will this affect my performance in A? I am willing to practice and improve, but I’ll only take AP if I feel it will improve my writing. Any suggestions and thoughts are welcome!

AP Lang will definitely improve your writing, but considering your status, it may be more difficult for you to do well. Lang is centered a lot around critical reading (more intense than SAT/ACT reading) and writing. While doing well certainly isn’t impossible, you will have to devote a lot of time and effort into the class. You should talk with your counselor or English teacher about whether or not you’ll be able to handle the intensive reading/writing, but if you think that you can handle the class, go ahead and take it.
