I score constant 6-7's on my in-class essays. Could you enlighten me with some essay advice, so I can break out of this threshold.

6-7’s are VERY good…

3 essays of 6-7 will almost PROMISE you a 5.

essays in the range of 8-9 are VERY difficult to come by. They only come with a very very great command of the english language and mostly with a good deal of luck of knowing the topic.

I can write a better essay on an article from the “Onion” then on the Green movement.

You might want to try throwing in some tropes (metaphors and similes are pretty easy to make up), this shows good craft. For instance for an open argument essay I talked about the Civil Rights Movement for evidence and said “racism was a disease which had to be remedied by white politicians, specifically Lyndon B Johnson with the signing of the Civil Rights Act”. Try something like that, I think it looks good too because it shows that you can make connections or something like that.

Good thinking! Thanks
