So, I’ve only taken one year of Latin (Latin I) but, I want to self-study for the next two years (no schedule space to take the course at school) and then take the AP Latin Exam May 2017. Do you guys think this is doable?
I discussed this with my Latin teacher who thinks that I could do it because I pick up everything fairly fast but, she is being forced to move schools because of a teacher with tenure (idk) and she’ll only be able to help me through email and Skype.
I have Ecce Romani I & II and a copy of the Aeneid in English and Latin. Are there any other resources that I should look into?
Any general advice on self-studying is appreciated. I have to go to my counselor right? If I just tell her then will she sign me up through the school when it comes time to take the Exam?
I’m doing the same… only that I HAVE no Latin background. The Latin teacher (who has 3 doctorates) handed me three textbooks and three workbooks that he designed for his Latin 1, 2, and 3 classes. It’s going to be a pain but doable with two years to study!
I second the online class suggestion. I just finished my first semester of AP Latin, and even though Latin is my best subject (A+ every year, gold medals on the NLE and NCEE every year, etc.), it’s incredibly hard – my hardest class, even. Just thinking about reading the Aeneid on my own gives me a headache, but an online class could definitely be beneficial.
@studeam Thanks for the input. I think my desire to learn Latin is representative of my overall struggle of whether to invest myself in scholarship or simply do things which are necessary to get by in various subjects. Learning because you’re in a class and learning because you’re truly into the subject are two very different mindsets and I’m having to reconcile the two. If the passion is there, and it’s sustainable go for the online class for sure.
