I'd like to place out of a year of freshman English. Which exam should I take and what study materials would you recommend?

It depends largely on the college. The college I want to go to uses AP Lang to get out of the freshman English requirement. One of my friends told me that her college uses AP Lit to get out of the requirement. So look at your colleges and judge from there. Get some sort of prep book and just take the practice tests. Really, you can’t study for AP English in general.

Salve! is right. It depends on some colleges because both Lang. and Lit. can get you out of Freshman English and you only have to take one. Or the college need Lit. only to get you out of it. You have to look up the college you’re going to. If either Lang. or Lit. get you out of Freshman English, choose the Lang. exam. It’s easier according to previous years’ scores. Moreover, improve your writing and reading analysis skills.

I agree with jerrry on if they accept Lang or Lit. The Language exam is known to be easier and I think it is more writing intensive. It tends to focus more on the language (hence the name of the class) that the author uses to present his purpose. Lit is more of just an overview of all the different time periods and literature that associates with them. So again, I would stress taking Language.

Can you recommend any materials for the Lang. exam?

It seems that the Princeton Review AP review book has the practice tests that are most like the real exam. Cliff’s is also highly recommended for AP Lang review. Both of these books are good for independent study.

You’ll need a lot of essay practice as well, as one of the core focuses of AP Lang is writing skills.

If you have horrible grammar, you should buy a grammar handbook. I used the Bedford Handbook. To improve style, Prose Style:The Contemporary Guide. If you want to know how AP essays are written, look at the example essays from AP Central.

Well, for Language I used the “Master the AP English Language Exam” by Peterson’s. I thought it was actually very good. Possibly a tiny bit harder than the actual exam though. I also had a CRAZY class. We did an in-class writing about every week. I got a 5 and I don’t know how, but my AP Eng Lit teacher this year apparently thinks I’m brilliant. I am a math/science person by the way…
