AP Lit Non-Required Reading

^ And to validate my claim, I wrote about The Great Gatsby on my AP Exam question 3, and ended up with a 5 on the exam. So it can’t hurt.

I personally wrote about The Poisonwood Bible for my essay (and got a 5). It’s probably one of the most recently written books that the College Board lists. Also, my personal favorite book is East of Eden

I wrote about The Kiterunner for my essay. It is a really good book and shouldn’t take too long. I would also say Crime and Punishment. There are so many things write about that book. My class talked a couple of times about how you could write on it for just about anything. Quite a few people used it this year, too.

About TKAM- My teacher (who goes down and grades the AP Lit FRQ ALOT) said to stick away from it. I can’t tell you how many times that she said it was considered a middle school level book. She said that she loves TKAM, and it is one of her favorite books, but one should alwasy try to shy away from it on the AP test. She said that if the prompt is screaming out to you to write about TKAM, than do it. But…she said that if you can write on something else, that you should.
btw-At my school we read it in 9th grade (which is what she teaches outside of AP).

I love TKAM, so I would say to read it just because it is a good story. If you are trying to pick novels out for the AP test, I would say to keep this one off of your list.
