On the MC section, if you read a passage and do not understand it should you re-read it, skip it and come back, or start the questions and hope that they will steer you in the right path. The problem with re-reading and skipping the questions is the fact that you are wasting a good few minutes.

be familiar with questions first. I usually skip the 1st one or two because they’re always general theme or what not. re-reading passages takes TOO MUCH time. I remember doing a practice one in class where I tried to understand this Achilles’ Shield poem written in old english (not really.. just seemed like it), and skipped like the last 10 questions on an easy passage

When I don’t understand the passage, 90% of the time the questions will steer me in the right path. I also almost always refer back to the passage when im doing MC, but I find that makes me often pressed for time.

Also, for the FRQ, do we write 3 essays non-stop for 2 hours? Or do they stop us after each essay?

The essays are nonstop. I think they give you cues when you should move on to the next question, but it’s at your leisure.

If I don’t understand a passage, I just force myself through the questions, because usually a few of the questions, as mentioned, may help you understand the passage, and a few other questions are very simple questions that you can get without understanding a word.

I must make a complaint, though: both AP English tests give way too little time for the MC sections. I don’t understand why they do that. Do they want to know if we can read well or do they just care if we can do it quickly? I know people who are much better at literature than I am who scored lower than I simply because I read a little faster. That’s ridiculous.

I couldn’t agree more Joe. Sure they know there are certain people who can read fast and pick up information easily, but they must know that there are also much more people who would be able to answer the questions correctly if they weren’t pressed for time. This applies to the essays as well imo. I mean many people just can’t put together an essay as quickly, but they understand what the passage is about. People shouldn’t be penalized like that because they work slower.

But thanks for the advice guys, I will just try to read it and move to the questions. Hopefully it works better.
