I was set on taking AP Lit next year (junior) and doing lang the following year. I want to do the harder one next year and save the easy one the following year. However I heard that AP Lang teaches you to write college essays, which would be helpful. I’m an okay writer and reader (As in English so far). Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of either class or what they think I should do?
Thanks!
Nationwide, AP Lang is close to 90% juniors and AP Lit is close to 90% seniors. That’s because Lang focuses on developing strong writing skills in different genres, while Lit applies those strong writing skills to analyzing literature.
In our school it’s actually the opposite compared to the poster above me. Seniors take lang. I don’t know why they switched it around. So my school is similar to yours!
@goldenbear2020 @penngirlpending thanks for the info!
My school is just like penngirl’s; we have Lit for juniors and Lang for seniors. I’m a junior taking Lit now, so while I can’t vouch for Lang, I can tell you that Lit is a great class if you genuinely love reading and writing (or at least want to improve your skills in the latter).
At my school, juniors take Lang…
Seniors at my school can take either AP Lit or dual enrollment/College English… which would be the better option? I hear that College English is a little bit easier but will that make a difference to colleges?
Colleges like to see how you do in actual college courses, because -surprise ! - the best predictor of college success is previous college success.
In my school they are interchangeable- you take either or both between 11th to 12th grade. My friend (we’re both in 12th grade) takes Lang but his class is mostly juniors so there’s that to consider.
In my school, sophomores take lang and juniors take lit. As a junior, i can give you some insight into them. Junior year is stressful, and lit (atleast at my school) is a very hard class (mostly for the teacher) compared to lang. On the other hand, lang was extremely useful to me, specially when it came to writing. Lang teaches you how to build and argument and properly support it with the passage (instead of you arguing, you use the passage as proof making the counterclaim go against the passage (; ), which is something you also gotta do for lit. Another great thing about lang is that the new essay for the SAT is exactly the same as the essays you will do in class and for the test (which wasnt so difficult, cant say anything about lit yet). I get why you’d want to take lit next year, but consider the benefit lang can provide. Best of luck!
Most kids at my school take Lang as juniors (although there have been a few sophomores in that class) and Lit as a senior
That’s what I’ll be doing. I already took Lang this year as a junior
