I’m selecting courses for senior year next year and I’m wondering whether to take AP Literature or Dual Enrollment English at my school. I currently take AP Language with an A average.
The Dual Enrollment course at my school is offered by Syracuse University with the courses WRT 105 and ETS 181. They are not at Syracuse University but certified teachers teach the course here at my school.
My teacher (who teaches the Dual Enrollment course) told us that AP Literature is only for those who want to enter the English field and encouraged people who were not pursuing English as a major to not take it but instead take the Dual Enrollment course.
I am going to be pursuing Computer Science as a major and my dream school is currently Carnegie Mellon. What should I do? Should I take AP Literature or the Dual Enrollment Course?
Look up the colleges you are considering (including realistic ones, not just super-reaches like CMU for CS) to see what their transfer subject credit policy is for AP scores and the type of dual enrollment course you are considering.
Some colleges do not like to accept credit for dual enrollment courses taught on high school campuses.
In my school, for many senior year classes, students on the honors track take AP, while regular students take dual enrollment. It might be a significantly easier class, and college might look down upon it. I would disagree that AP Lit if only for English majors. Honesty AP Lit is good prep for a freshman English class you might need to take as a general education requirement.
However, how many other APs are you planning on taking? If your are planning on planning on taking 4 or more (not counting English) I’d recommend the dual enrollment class so you don’t overextend yourself and it’s not in your area of interest. How are your English abilities? Did you take AP Lang? AP Lit requires reading and analyzing a lot of books. If you hate reading and don’t get a particularly high grades in English don’t take AP Lit.
AP Eng Lit is a very time-consuming class that requires a ton of reading and analysis work. I wouldn’t say that it is only for English majors. Almost everyone is required to take English writing or composition classes in college and this class is extremely good prep for it. My kid constantly whined about the teacher and amount of work and stress in this class and wound up getting B’s in the class, but he did eke out a 5 on the AP test and thus was able to bypass both of his college Composition classes.
@cram545 I’m taking AP Language with an A average. I’m taking 5 other AP’s (AP US Gov, AP Micro, AP Physics C, AP Calculus BC, and AP Computer Principles.) Also I’m not a fan of reading but for class I end up forcing myself to read.
You’re already talking a lot of APs, especially hard ones. You don’t want to add a class that you hate reading on top of that. I’d reccomend the dual enrollment course. Remember senior year you will be busy with college apps and you don’t want to spread yourself too thin.
Considering your schedule, I’d go with Dual Enrollment English. BC+ Physics C will be a LOT of work and you MUSt get A’s if you’re aiming for top CS schools.
