Should I take AP Literature? How hard and time consuming is it and could it be beneficial?

That class sounds like torture and a waste of time. Who wants to analyze fictional books from 500 years ago? I don’t see how it would benefit you.

I know… But I really don’t want to have to deal with it in college…

It’s not that bad? So far we’ve only read one book from earlier than 1900.

What book was it? Can you give me some examples of what kind of things you do in there?

You won’t have to, most colleges only make you take one english composition class for general ed. AP comp would take care of that.

^^
Frankenstein. Mostly because they had a lot of copies in the school library. Dunno if it’s a popular choice.
Wait, make that two because we read The Awakening and that’s from 1899.

Stuff we do:
- Vocab quizzes. Not worth many points.
- Class discussion.
- Essays, typically 5-10 pages double-spaced.
- Read plays from the textbook in class.
- Book tests/quizzes that involve a lot of analyzing why characters acted the way they did.
- Presentations, group and individual. Research a topic relevant to a book and present it to the class.

Hey, just here to help you out like you asked! (hope this is the right thread!)

For AP Lit…
I haven’t taken it yet, but I can tell you what I’ve heard from some of my friends.

Current senior taking it who got a 36 on the ACT, Full ride to LSU (not that prestigious, but she has no cash, so it’s a godsend for her), 3 time member (as in, she started 10th grade) in the Florida State Academic Team and currently ranked no.3 out of ~5k students at LSU (not that prestigious, but that’s one impressive rank!) told me that AP Lit “sucks 11 dicks each day”. Most of the seniors at my school skip out of it by taking a similar literature class at a college nearby us. It’s not favored, but even so, I still recommend taking it.

It’s a hard class, guaranteed, but I’ve heard being able to do successfully in that class is highly dependent on your ability to budget your time successfully. There is no way you can even think about procrastinating in that class. The book material can also be hard, so your ability to read well might also be a factor in that class. Some of the books I’ve seen appear on the exam aren’t that hard; The Adventures of Huck Finn, Catch-22(fav book!), 1984, Candide and The Grapes of Wrath aren’t particularly hard to work with. However, the class also has hard books; Othello, Hamlet, The Scarlet Letter, etc are all hard (to me, at least) in the sense that the plot is easy(ish) to follow, but understanding what’s actually going on is a challenge.

If you haven’t taken AP Lang yet, I’d strongly recommend taking it. Even if you have taken AP Lang, I’d still recommend taking it. It’s great prep for college reading (if you care about that) and it looks a lot better on the resume, especially in senior year.

Of course, that’s just my 2 cents. I’m still waiting on taking it next year. I’m just telling you what I’ve heard from people I know who’ve taken it and from books that I’ve read that are (supposedly) commonplace with the class.

I know this is kinda asking a lot, but would you mind giving me a chance back on a different chance thread I made as well? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1472407-yale-notre-dame-cornell-georgia-tech-uf.html

Hope I helped!

Are the ap lit teacher(s) good at your school? I’m taking ap lit right now and I love it mainly because my teacher is amazing. She’s incredibly funny and explains the nuances, hero’s journey, dark forces, and just so much more. It’s cool having a teacher that inspires me and makes me want to work and actually read the books despite senioritis. Take the class if the ap lit teacher at your school is awesome. just my opinion haha. (We’ve read Hard Times, Tess of the d’Urbervilles, Macbeth, Hamlet, Gulliver’s Travels, and some other things. I’m pretty sure I’m forgetting some books…)

At my school, AP Lit is basically a philosophy class. My teacher sometimes will sit there silently for forty minutes while us students kick around ideas we got from the assigned book, poem, short story, etc. Honestly, half the time reading isn’t even necessary to participate in discussion because it starts to focus so much on “big ideas.”

If you have friends who perhaps like the same books that you like or think similarly to you, you should try asking them how it is! Be careful who you ask - many of my best friends do not like the class most days. In regard to books we are vastly differently so we have reached different conclusions about AP Lit.

Personally, I love it and it loves me, but I’ve been a reading fiend my whole life so I mean, there ya go haha. It can be hard work, but it’s so rewarding to be able to bounce ideas off of your fellow peers and teacher!

AP Lit, here is pretty easy. Not really “hard”. You can expect to spend most of your time reading stuffs. But it get complitcated with the “What is the significance of… blah blah blah?” You get into details in what you are reading. Also you might come up with some very fun and interesting books.

I read last year:
-Kite Runner
-Catcher in the Rye (Just a horrible story, IMO)
-The Adventures of Huck Finn

Also we read a bunch of short stories (and had to do essays on them).
Some I remembered:
-Yellow Wallpaper
-…

Yea, it’s pretty hard to remember even most of the books I read.
But what bl4ke360 is probably referring to is Shakespeare’s. I’ll have you know that we read The Tradery of Julius Caesar and that was probably the best play I read from him. It’s really fun if you like the whole War and Scandal and act of betrayal plot. I’m sure many might not be reading Caesar but I read other Shakespeare’s this year in AP Lang and only Hamlet was memorable enough. Othello is eh. Your teachers can make the story fun though.

My son took AP lang. in 11th grade he got a 5 on the AP exam. He had to decide whether to take AP lit. before he knew what he got on the AP test however what I did was check the colleges he was thinking of applying to. I would recommend you do the same. In his case it seemed like if you got a 4 or 5 on the AP lang. it really didn’t help him to take AP Lit because the AP lang gave him the credits he needed to fullfill the college english requirement. So he didn’t take it. However it would depend on the colleges you are applying to and what you are going to major in.

I plan to major in the sciences and it’s on my other thread, but I took an advanced literature class called American studies which is basically harder than advanced 11th grade lit but not as hard as AP Language, but the teacher who taught the class was also the AP Language teacher. She told me that I should join ap language, but I didn’t want to switch classes in the middle of the year because of block scheduling. She recommended me for AP Lit ad she also told me that I write better than 90% of her AP Language students.

I would tackle it. But there would be little point if you’re going for the Sciences. I am going into Engineering and I learned A LOT in AP Lit and AP Lang. I would take on the teacher’s recommendation and as Michigan said, look into what your colleges want.

Alright thanks. Im looking at UGA and who knows if I ever publish some sort of great science paper I dot want it to look horrible.

At my school it is supposed to be rather easy (I will be taking it next year). At least at my school it is basically if you are okay with reading a lot and writing an essay every couple of weeks you will be fine. Talk to some friends at your school who are currently in the class, they will give you the most accurate description of what the class will be like for you.

I am taking it this year and I think I like it so much because I love my teacher. Obviously it is going to depend from school to school but I would personally recommend it. In my class, we do mostly in class writing. We have only had maybe 1 take home essay among other smaller writing assignments outside of class.
One logistical thing I suggest taking into account though is whether the AP credit will help you at all if you do go to UGA. In the case that you took AP Lang & Comp and did well, it may or may not be worth taking the class in the case that passing the AP test wont provide any additional credit. The class itself is certainly enjoyable but if you want an easier senior year, I would take this into account. I live in CA and the college Im going to next year does take both AP Lit and AP Lang AP scores and if you pass both, you get some GE credit plus some extra electives credits. It would be worth checking out to see what UGA’s policy is. Best of luck and if you do take it, I am sure you’ll enjoy it! :D
