AP music theory exam

im taking the ap mt course this year and i just wanted to get some feedback from past music theory test takers any good advice?

ALSO!

whats considered passing on the exam?

a 3

i'm taking it this year too =)

how are u guys preparing for it?

taking a class or self study?

what books should I get?

i'm in a class..... i really don't think i would be able to do it self studying, it's pretty difficult.

i forget the name of the book we have. it is blue though haha.

hey! I took the music theory ap exam last year, and got a 4! :) i didn't take the course cuz my school didn't offer it, so i just self-studied ish.

but i've taken up to advanced level piano CM theory tests and succeeded, so i already knew all that material. then i just had to practice the listening free response questions a lot.
I also bought a copy of a released ap test and did it and reviewed it and did it again and had my piano teacher help me with free response questions and whatnot, and that helped a lot.
i also borrowed a college textbook "Tonal Harmony" (i think that's what it's called) and i'm pretty sure it has everything on it, but i never got to browse through it thoroughly (too intimidating, just like a big fat textbook, so yeah...)

i guess if you have any other questions, just go ahead and ask me. XD

I took it in 2007. Prior to that class, the only experience I had with formal music instruction were three shoddy years of violin in elementary school (not even private lessons; just in public school). Nonetheless, I worked hard and mastered the "knowledge" and "concepts" better than most of the students who had been taking piano for almost, if not more than, a decade. However, there was simply no way I could substitute a lifelong lack of experience with ear training, so I did horribly on dictation and sight-singing.

In the end, I got a 4 on the conceptual/knowledge part (harmonic analysis, chord inversions, voice-leading, etc), and got a 2 on the aural part (sight-singing and dictation), which rounded to a passing 3. I was happy, especially considering I was years behind everyone else at the beginning of the class.
