<p>I am thinking about taking ap music theory this year. I have a hole in my schedule, however I have heard that this class is quite hard. I really do not want to be a music major but I need to boost my GPA. I played piano for 5 years, and have an okay year.</p>

Tbh I think music theory is really hard. If you want to boost your GPA then maybe taking it isn’t the best idea. If you know the teacher really well, then can’t you just go to class and do the tests/assignments but not for marks?</p>
<p>AP Music Theory is pretty hard, but knowing piano might help you. I say this because many of the people who had played piano for years did well in my class.
If you do decide to do the work for grade purposes, pm me and I will give you some pointers. I took the test and made a 4.</p>
<p>I am personally adept at Music Theory since I have a perfect pitch and I have been playing piano for like ten years. This is an INCREDIBLY EASY course if you’re a music expert like me. But as for others who don’t practice Mozart’s movement for 5 hours straight and listens to Eine Kleine Nachtmusik on his MP3(lol I AM a music freak), I say Music Theory is not really “a piece of cake.” It will be a challenge, especially if you have no background in music. You, on the other hand, did play piano for 5 years so an A or B IS manageable if you work assiduously. AP should help increase your GPA. I say if you think you can put in considerable amount of effort, you’ll get a good grade on the course.</p>

<p>I think if you want to be a music major, you should go for it; regardless of a the difficulty factor (unless you think it’s way out of your league). You’ll spend more time on that class anyway, because you’ll like it more. (I hope.)</p>

Anyway, I’m starting into Music Theory completely fresh and so far it’s alright. There are a lot of terms to memorize, but conceptually it’s not too hard. I don’t plan on majoring in music, either, I just took this course for fun :P</p>

<p>Any theories about what kind of student finds Music Theory hard or easy? My kid is doing well in it with a choral music background only. Just wondering.</p>
<p>If you have experience reading music, it shouldn’t be that tough. Singing experience helps too.</p>
<p>I went to the American Boychoir school for three years, so like your son I have an extensive choral background. I find the class to be very easy and pretty much just show up to take the tests. However, I have had three years of music theory at the boychoir school and would sing for two-three hours a day.</p>
<p>I came into this class not knowing how to read music. Though my ear is better than most, the written part of the class (in truth, most of it), induces regret, day in and day out. I wish I never took this damned class, but it’s too late to drop, so I suppose I’m stuck with it. It’s hell.</p>
