AP Music Theory Scores

Hey, I am not going to be a music major or anything. I just took this class randomly, and I thought the exam was VERY difficult. My score was a 4.
I was wondering what everybody else made...

5, 10characters

DD got a 5. She’s not a music major either.

Pranam0, Congratulations! A 4 is a very good score, especially for one who took the course “randomly”. From what I have seen of music theory, it is not for wimps. My D did take this year’s exam, and got a 5. She did think it was more difficult than the 2008 exam, which we bought for practice. She is also the kind of kid who curls up with music theory books because she just loves it, she has studied theory as part of piano since age 6, she took a review course, and she has a very keen ear. So if she had gotten less than a 5 we would have been surprised. I do not expect her to get 5’s on any other AP exams she will take, however. There is nothing else for which she has this level of interest.

You will find lots of kids like this on this forum. You might be better off getting stats from your classmates or teacher, if you took a class.

The AP music theory exam is a pretty intensive exam in the basics of music theory, it is roughly the equivalent of level 6 on the ABRSM program and that is pretty comprehensive. To get a 4 on that without taking formal classes is nothing to sneeze at. Put it this way, a lot of kids choke on lower level music theory, even a lot of gifted musician types, even with all the prep programs and such:)

Just wondering if you received the scores in the mail or called to get them. Since S is away and the score wont count for conservatory anyway, we figured that we would wait for the mail. But now we are getting curious. Why can’t they just post the scores on the website like the SAT?!!

I don’t think any AP scores have been released yet, but are available by phone if you want to call and pay the extra fee for same. We haven’t heard anything( D took 3 AP classes this year) yet, but a friend of hers called the college she will be attending to inquire about the receipt of a document and a grad student working in the admissions office read her AP scores to her!
Seems like they are a bit late this year, doesn’t it?

AP Scores have been arriving in mailboxes across the country for the last few days, according to the AP forum on CC; the Midwest states seem to have gotten them Saturday and today–I know my S’s arrived today. So, you should be getting them very soon.

Thanks for the update. Mail here in Florida is always a few days behind the rest of the country. I will check out the main forum.

Just looked at several other sites, including the testing service site itself and read that none have gone out yet, but that they are expected to be sent out next week. Add that to Clarimom’s post and we have total confusion!! But, since she actually has one in her hand, I’d tend to go with yet another site that said that the results of some tests are sent out at different times, due to some complexity in the scoring. Makes some sense. D took AP Euro, AP Lit and AP French and nothing has come yet. Since the reports contain the results of every AP test they have ever taken and there was a problem with the administration of the AP French exam, perhaps that would cause a delay for students who took that test? The friend of her’s that I mentioned also took AP Euro and her college, U of Maryland, had the score although she, personally, did not.
Clarimom, could you please tell us what tests you have the scores from?

This is the paragraph from the College Board site:
Exam Grades
AP Grade Reports are sent in July to the college or university you designated on your answer sheet, to you, and to your high school. Each report is cumulative and includes grades for all the AP Exams you have ever taken, unless you have requested that one or more grades be withheld from a college or canceled. Visit AP Grade Reporting Services.

sorry I know you were looking for the other clarinet parent, but we live in California and my D’s arrived last week. She just took the one exam.

Mezzo’sMama, S took APStats and APCalc, but if you check the CC forums under SAT/ACT, then AP Test Preparation, there’s the topic “AP Scores by Mail 2009”. (Sorry, I don’t know how to set up a link to it) You’ll see people have been receiving them all over since last week, so you can check if there’s anyone in your area.

Well, lo and behold, they came today!! So much for the Educational Testing Service web site!

My D got a 4, and 4 in all subscores. She was OK with that as she was only a sophomore. She wanted to take the class earlier than most in her school so she could take that knowledge into her next 2 years of school, still knowing that the test itself doesn’t earn any college credit or place you out of any classes in most colleges.

The scores came in in NJ today. D got a 5, with subscores of a 5 in aural, 4 in non-aural. Since she’s voice with side of violin, the whole bass clef thing was new. She’s thrilled!

The scores came in S. Florida today too, we are notoriously late in receiving mail, it always takes an extra day or 2 for some reason. S is happy with his 5 with 5’s in both subscores, but it will of course not help him get any credit. At Eastman they will not even give credit for other academic AP scores unless you are a “double” student. Your other academic program will accept it, but not the music school.
