AP Music Theory... Will it be considered a "slacker" class for Seniors applying to top schools like Stanford, Berkely, Cornell, and MIT? I have other options including: AP Chem (hard, poor teacher), AP Computer Sci (hard, poor teacher), Non-weighted classes, Chem (hard) and other classes at CC,

Is it better to take classes at your high school or at a community college? Which would make you a better applicant? Should I take a class over summer (which will probably be harsh) or focus on SATs, voluteering, and relaxing?

If you’re just taking it because you want to load up on APs and boost your GPA, then yes, I’m sure colleges could see that and wouldn’t consider it as rigorous as the other APs. But if you have a lot of other APs in core classes (AP Lit, AP Calc, AP Bio, etc), and you are genuinely interested in music theory, then I think you should take it as it wouldn’t do any harm.

Have you shown passion for music by taking many music classes throughout your high school career? Like, if this is only the second time you’ve taken music, then yes, it will look like a slacker class.

Are you proficient in music? Otherwise, don’t think it’s an easy class.

I’ve heard from that it’s actually pretty tough.

of course its not a slacker class, it’s AP. what a silly question

As a theory nerd, I am vaguely offended by the question.

It’s actually a really difficult class…only take it if you’re proficient in music.

No! It’s an extremely difficult class, even if you play an instrument, and if you think otherwise you’re misguided!

i’m taking a 3 year course of it…my school’s weird, but yeah, it’s hard enough spaced out ridiculously

It’s tough, but not impossible.

If you play an instrument or sing, then go for it…otherwise, you really have no use for it.

IMHO, the actual theory is not very hard, however, the ear training (about half of the exam) is very difficult and is not something that can be mastered over night. Not for the faint of heart.
