AP Music Theory

I want to take the class next year, does anyone know what they do in the class, has anyone taken the class before, if so how was it, how is the ap test, etc?

Here’s what you’d learn/be doing:

Sight-Singing

Basic Written ‘Theory’ (scales, rhythms, chords, progressions)

Aural Dictations: Harmonic and Melodic

Realization of Figured Bass

Composition of Bass lines
etc.

It increased your music knowledge SO MUCH! I was in an online homeschooled class, so I’m unsure of what you’d be doing in class. However, as for the AP test, it was HARD–you only need ~67% to get a 5, so I’m pretty sure everyone walked out of the test room feeling bad. I ended up getting a 5, with subscores of 5 and 5. The Barron’s Review book was far superior to the rest in terms of preparation.

^What they said. :)

I took a theory class at my school and learned these things (but on #3, we had rhythmic as well). However, taking the AP exam was optional because the class was only 1 semester and there was still material to be self-studied. Our class was fairly intense (i.e. our final was listening to a song and writing out all the parts to it), but I didn’t take the AP exam.

I genuinely LOVED my theory class because I love music. If you hate music with all of your soul, don’t take the class. Also, having a grasp on music theory already helps when you get to more difficult portions of the class. Good luck!

Hi. I’m taking music theory next year and I’m wondering if I should consider taking the test. My school does not offer AP music theory anymore, but the class itself is the same length as any other non- lab science AP class. I will have this class from August to December, making jan-may prime time to study topics not covered in class to the extent that they are on the exam. I am planning on majoring in Vocal Performance so I feel it would be beneficial for me to take this test. Does this sound like a good plan?

I’d take the test if you can manage to score a 4/5 on practice tests.
