I'm considering taking the AP Music Theory exam, but I'm not majoring in music. Would it still be worth taking anyway?

depends if it will satisfy some gen ed requirement at your college...

I have heard that it is one of the hardest AP courses offered...

You'll fall asleep in that class, its so boring.

I say it's not so hard if u'r interested in music. I myself got a bunch of review Q's and a college prep book for the test.
However, I've heard colleges like UCs don't take Art History and Music Theory into consideration.

What if you do really bad on it? What if you just take it for taking it since you're interested in music and have some theory background? Would it hurt you if you did bad on it in senior year?

I'm planning to take it too. What is a book for self-study over the summer?

I took the ap music theory class this last year. The teacher has a book for it, but i cant remember the title. I'll drop her an email and ask her

I'm wondering about a good book for it also....

Virtuoso_735 - if you find a good book, please let me know. I looked at the stats of the number of kids that take the tests, and it's only about 9000 (which is NOTHING). I don't think any of the usual test prep companies make a book, and I reviews on amazon.com of one that is out from a lesser known company indicate that the resource sucks.

By the way, a great tool on collegeboard is to create a TEACHER account for yourself - you get access to materials like past tests and questions and such that you don't get access to as students. I agree- I looked at the test and it doesn't look hard at all (especially the free response).

I'm scared of the dictation and harmonizing. I'm not really sure how that goes. And the sight-singing. Look intimidating. I'm sure the free response will be much harder than the mc for me.

ooops.....forgot about this thread until Virtuoso PMed me. Below is mostly what I replied:

I used the HarperCollins College Outline of Music Theory. Not a AP prep book, not sure if there's any for MT...It's well explained, a little profoundity and has explanation to key terms I found in released exam. There's another book called Harmony and Voice Leading from the same outline. Haven't tried that book, but may be useful since there are about 4 voice leading Q's worth a big chunk of pts I wasn't sure on the AP exam.

2ndly, I practiced all the FR released on collegeboard. (not only the student ones) Besides, our teacher gave us the 1993, 1998 and 2003 released exams (the worthiest thing we've got in class). Then I pretty much guessed what's basicly gonna be on the test.......The test was fairly easy compare to the other ones I've practiced...especiallly the MC section which u guys should take the same 1....

The Sight singing was hard 2 me at first as well.....beginning of the year....but we've got lots of practice since our teacher majored in voice...and I also practiced all sightsings from 1998-2005....there should be 2........one is compound , the other is simple meter....one is treble, the other is bass clef.....one is major, the other is minor...

Hope these helps......

Thanks dorisz.

Do you know where I could get released exams?

I think you can actually buy them of collegeboard.com

yeah......u can......I have some.....not sure how to get those to u guys though..........for the questions..........I founded those in the educator section.......

yeah i think I might order them then

how is the sight singing part tested? cause i think thats the only part i have problem with.....anyway, its funny that PR and Kaplan dont have review books for this test......

It's because only about 9,000 kids take it a year.

Oh, for the sight singing part...u get a tape..then they record u.

hmmm....thats why i am worried, cause my voice is just so...well...intolerable.......then the tape will degrade my voice even more #_#>>>>>>>>>>
and the only talent i have for music is listening, distinguishing the closest two notes in the fastest tempo. thats it....no singing ability and no coordination for any instrument.
