I don't know about AP theory specifically, but I took two years of music theory classes at my school. They really helped me as a musician. Take it!

I take regular - and if you've been a musician for a while, then it'll be so freakn' easy. I'm rusty since I haven't read sheet music since 7th grade (clarinet) and normally only read tab for my guitar, but it's definitely helped. Really, I think AP would be a good challenge for you - not too hard and not easy. Good luck with your choice.

The reason I ask is because I've been playing for about 6 years, but have never really been exposed to much theory and we don't have a basic theory class, just AP Music Theory (first year for this course at our school).

And this year, there are 2 people with A's, 2 people with C's, and everyone else is failing.
My friend who is taking it has done theory for a long time and still has to constantly study to achieve an A.
Hours of studying for theory to do well would probably cost my time for studying for other classes, but I want to get some background in theory.
If I take the class and don't do well, then its like I waste my time because when I do well, I think it measures if I am grasping the concepts etc.

So could someone who has taken the class tell me how it is?
Details of progressions covered, writing music, chords, skips/misses, etc.
My friend also told me you have to be able to sing, or at least hold a pitch to write out songs while they play them.

It is extremely hard. I play 4 woodwinds, can sight read just about anything and play jazz, and am getting a B+ in the class. The listening aspect is a lot more difficult than the written part, but both are still difficult. Best of luck!

Listening as in what? I have perfect pitch and I'm music literal but not as good as you. I'm also strong in theory. Just takes me a while to read things sometimes but I'm gettting better.

Grr...I want perfect pitch...I have an issue hearing intervals and the bass notes of a harmonic progression. Give me a melody line, and I can pretty much mimic it fine.
