the point is even if it is possible to test out, it is not a good idea to skip the intro. Agree it varies with colleges but many do offer a waiver. Some students have done theory at conservatory prep for years and years but still should take the intro. Sorry, not relevant here. Last post on this!
That was not the case at either my sons undergrad or grad programs (for undergrads).
All undergrad music majors had to take all of music theory at the college. No exceptions with even a 5 on the AP exam.
This was for a performance major. Perhaps this is allowed for composition majors. But it wasn’t allowed for performance or music education majors…and his friends at other colleges had the same requirement.
AP music theory was irrelevant. Placement testing was done by the school.
Agree…placement tests are done for theory…AP is not relevant.
So…really, why does this poster want to self study and take this AP exam except to rack up scores on the AP exams. This exam is a tough one.
My kid did place out of class piano!
