Taking AP tests in the coming 2 weeks, and was wondering whether UChicago had any overlapping credits in which they only count one test’s scores even if you get a 5 on two tests of similar subjects. For example, I took AP Lang last year and got a 5, so would getting a 5 on AP Lit this year offer me any new credit or no?
The credit you get for either of the courses you mention is probably pretty meaningless in practice. They count toward the number of units you need for graduation but don’t fulfill any other requirement (Core or major). Looks like each counts separately. I guess each means one more quarter in which you may take 3 rather than 4 classes.
^The College also has a new graduation requirement for the class of 2021 and later cohorts. 3800 credits (or more) of the 4200 you need to graduate must be taken here (transfer students are the exception).
Sort of. Credit hours aren’t the only value APs have at UChicago. Some APs may be used to fulfill requirements or affect placement with conferring credits. For example, French AP satisfies the foreign language requirement, but doesn’t earn you credit hours. Chem and Calc get you placement in honors intro courses in their respective fields, but if you decide to go that route, no credit hours. Hypothetically, if you used those 3 APs in that way, you could still get the credit hours from 4 other AP courses in fields like History or English. While a max of 4 APs may be counted toward courses required to graduate, that doesn’t mean that a HS student who will matriculate at UChicago will reap no advantage from taking/doing well on more than 4 AP tests.
Just thought people would like to know that placement tests are going to be available May 15 for the class of 2021. I believe they weren’t available until early July in previous years.
Also, to chime in on the AP test thread, I believe students don’t have to take the math placement test if they scored a 5 on Calc. A/B or 4 or 5 on Calc. B/C - they place out of 151 and into 152, but not higher.
