I haven’t taken honors physics yet. However, I am in Calc AB currently (junior), and since AP Physics 1 needs only an Algebra II base, I can probably take it next year, right? But can I just skip to AP Physics 2, or will I miss a bunch of concepts, even though I have surpassed the math req.?
http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/public/courses/teachers_corner/224793.html says that AP physics 1 or similar is a prerequisite for AP physics 2.
People normally take 1 first but you can take 1 and 2 at the same time so I can’t believe it matters that much. If you only take 1 of these you basically only cover half a year of college physics. Read up on what each course covers and talk to the teachers at your school because some schools have specific rules on who can take what AP.
Will it affect me at all if I will have only taken the equivalent of half a year of college physics? @adchai
Does it matter in terms of college admissions/future college classes if I will have only taken the equivalent of half a year of college physics by the end of my senior year? @acdchai
Do you want to learn mechanics or electricity?
I have not a clue what major I intend to pursue. @tigerman333
@mohammadmohd18 Not necessarily major but which of the two disciplines interests you more?
I don’t know enough about either. I’m not even really sure I want a STEM major. But if I do decide that I’m so inclined, I thought it would be nice to have a nice college-level phsyics base to work from, rather than start from nothing and be at a disadvantage. @tigerman333
Take AP Physics 1.
physics* in my previous post. And yeah I figured I should just do that haha thank you @MYOS1634
Our school teaches Physics 1 and Physics 2 as one, two semester class, students are expected to take both AP exams at the end of the year.
@3scoutsmom At my school, there are no semester classes. Everything is year-long. So whenever I hear things like that, I inwardly regret attending my school, because at another school, I know that I could have taken many more APs, since a lot of them could have been semester-long. I would then be taking like 14 or 15 APs instead of my, hopefully, 10 APs.
The law of diminishing returns applies after about 8 Ap’s, so as far as colleges go, there’s no difference between 10 and 14. No regrets to have
Will the AdComms think that I didn’t take the less rigorous course load, however, considering that I chose not to take AP Bio sophomore year and I decided to take Honors Calc sophomore year instead of going from PreCal to AB? @MYOS1634
I think most students would only have 1 AP Physics class unless they were very interested in a STEM major. Your counselor is really the only one can tell you how rigorous your courses are in terms of what is offered at your school and what you and your peers have taken. Taking just one of these shouldn’t hurt you at all. Do read up on what is covered in each class and you may be far more interested in 1 than the other. It’s always better to take the AP classes in subjects where you will enjoy doing the higher level of work.
If your GC rates your schedule as “most rigorous” AO’s will not spend much time analyzing your schedule. Your entire application will be read in 12-15 minutes so there is no time for them to psychoanalyze your course selections.
About the whole GC thing. Do I have any role in requesting a rating from my GC? Or does s/he just do it when the school sends my transcript?
And about the transcript itself: do I have to worry about that being sent? Or do I just send my ComApp and my SAT I/SAT II/ACT scores and the school will send them to the colleges I applied to?
I am hilariously uninformed about some of the specifics of applying. @skieurope
Not if your GC is doing his/her job.
It’s on the Secondary School Report that the GC sends out. See the top of p. 2.

No. It’s not the GC’s first rodeo. They know how to do their jobs. Good luck.
@skieurope, the Secondary School Report has multiple sections about the GC’s opinion of me, and whether s/he would “Enthusiastically” recommend me or not. What if my GC(s) do not know me that well, if at all? I’m a junior at this point; should I get to know him/her?
