I’m a sophomore in chemistry honors, and physics is required next year. I’m doing really well in chem (98 last semester) so my teacher asked if I wanted to do AP physics next year. I’m not super confident when it comes to STEM subjects, so I said I’ll just to honors physics. I’m now reconsidering, as I want to challenge myself in my junior year, but I don’t want to be super lost either. I’m in algebra II and finished last semester with a 90. Math doesn’t come extremely naturally to me but I’m willing to work hard. I’m definitely taking AP Lang and AP USH next year, do you think this will be a crazy workload considering my abilities?
Do what you feel is more comfortable for you. Physics is math heavy so IMO, you are making a smart choice to do honors. You can always do AP senior year.
Honors sounds like a very fair alternative. Taking Precalculus or whatever course comes after Al2 at your high school at the same time as AP Physics can cause some curriculum conflict (Usually AP Physics demands some amount of prereq Precalc/Calc knowledge).
Remember Junior year should be your busiest years in terms of workload, so I would err on the side of caution. If you have time, taking an online prep course right now or over the summer could help you make a decision and prepare you for the course.
Depends on if you can handle the workload/time management. I think your chem and A2 grades show that you are ready for AP 1. I had a 88 in Chem HN but the teacher still recommended me for AP 1 b/c it is an introductory course. Precalculus should be the corequisite for AP 1 as it goes hand in hand and some of your units are the same, but I doubt you will ever encounter a problem in AP 1 where you can’t “do the math” b/c you haven’t learned it yet. Yes, physics as a subject is very math-intensive, but AP 1 focuses a lot on conceptually understanding. Yes, the derivations from rearranging variables can get really tricky at times, but the math itself isn’t that complicated.
TLDR: I think you are ready for AP 1 but be prepared for a hard class/workload.
