Hi everybody, I am currently signed up for AP chemistry for my upcoming sophomore year of high school. I attempted the summer homework and decided that I might want to take an easier AP science course. I thought about taking AP Phy B, because the teacher for that at my school is really good. The AP chem teacher is ok by what ive heard. I havent taken a year of chem or physics before and the only experience i have with chem was general science from 8th grade. I am enrolled for Honors Pre-Calculus next year, which means that math is not a difficulty for me. I decided to hold off AP chem until im a junior or senior. right now i am more on the side of AP Phy, but i cannot make too many judgments on my own because i dont have too much experience with them. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You,

As a sophomore any AP core science course can be a stretch. Not even in the most academic high schools is it typical for student to be offered the opportunity and to take AP lab science courses so early. So if you can manage either course you’ll achieve a higher level of rigor than most students.

Both courses are core lab science. You’re planning to take them both (perhaps at a higher level eventually for physics) before you graduate. So it really makes no difference what you choose at this point. Follow your instincts in deciding.

I think I’m going to go with AP Physics because most people I know have taken regular chemistry before AP Chem. I have a feeling that I’ll be better at physics because I like math. I’ll gather experience from high school and maybe that will make AP Chem a bit easier if I take it later on, because I wouldnt want to risk my gpa during my second year of high school. Thanks,

I took AP chem my sophomore year. It wasn’t a difficult class for me because the teacher was very easy, but I had to self teach most of the stuff. I still managed to get a 4 on the AP test. Take which ever class you feel comfortable handling this year. If I recall, the number of students who pass the AP Physics B test compared to that of the AP Chemistry test is relatively the same so it’s not that Chemistry is necessarily “harder”.

Unfortunately I just figured out that AP Physics B is full and has had a wait list since June. So, it looks like I’m sticking with AP Chem because I dont want to waste a year on regular chem. The only other AP science i qualify for next year is AP Environmental science, which im not too fascinated about. Thank you for the info,
