AP Physics B Textbook

Hey guys. I'm taking AP Physics B in school this year and I need some major advice. Our teacher does not explain anything properly. He just solves a problem on the board without teaching us the concepts first. I tried reading the respective textbook sections for what we're learning but that too isn't much of a help [Buffa].

Is there any textbook out there for algebra based physics that can help me out here? I heard good things about Giancolli and Cutnell/Johnson. Which one is better based on your experience?

btw, is this the cutnell johnson book? -> Amazon.com: Physics (9780471663157): John D. Cutnell, Kenneth W. Johnson: Books

Hope you guys will help me out here! :(

I am using the Giancolli, I am not even reading the book…too much crap in it.

AP Physics B PR is to go.

I plan on getting the PR book towards the middle of March or so for the exam. But for now I want to concentrate on learning the material and doing well in the class. So in your opinion, Giancolli isn’t good? Hmmm…

bump…:(

no, giancoli is very very good

use the princeton review ap physics b as a supplement, but you need the background from an actual physics textbook

Cutnell / Johnson is really good so far, with the exception of their rotational motion chapter. It explains the concepts very poorly, but luckily, they’re easy to pick up.

Cutnell/Johnson is great with mechanics, but not enough for linear momentum, rotational motion, and fluid and pressure. I feel that the book need more practice problems. (could do the even number problems, but the book doesn’t have the answers for them)

I feel that Cutnell/Johnson lacks in challenging problems. There are a lot of easy problems that are comparable to the multiple-choice section of the AP exam, but there aren’t enough to prepare students for the AP exam. I know that the purpose of the textbook isn’t to prepare for the exam, but the FRQs seem to be more pertinent to real life, anyway, because of the concept synthesis. My teacher constantly brings outside documents to have us do practice FRQs.
