Hello I am currently a senior in high school and have just started school. I am in a dilemma because I want to do chemical engineering as my undergraduate major but also want to pursue medicine in the future. I am taking Ap calculus Ab this year so I am not sure if I should take AP physics c and instead take bio. I know that both classes are required to take the mcat but wanting to do engineering as my major puts me at a road block. What should I do?
Many chemical engineering programs require at least a semester of biology as well. Pick a school you’re interested in and check.
You will find that many universities only accept a 5 on AP Biology to get course credit. It is also possible that the credit may be for a lower level of biology that doesn’t meet your engineering requirements. The AP Physics exams are more respected by colleges in terms of approximating a typical college physics course, so universities tend to accept lower scores and offer credit for more advanced classes.
Another thing to consider is that some medical schools do not accept AP credit for particular premed requirements. For this reason, many pre-meds choose to forgo all their AP credit and just retake the courses in college, keeping all their medical school options open.
I say Physics because it may help you decide if you’ll enjoy engineering academics. Next year you may or may not opt to take the AP credit, but it is still good college prep either way.
