Ap Physics C

<p>Hi, i'm taking AP Phys C next year as a self study and I wanted to know where i can get some really good materials and books. Have anyone ever heard of KineticBooks, its like an online course but I'm not sure how good it is, even though they said it was phys C material. Any help would be appreciated.</p>

<p>I'm using Fundamentals of Physics (7th ed) by Halliday, Resnick, and Walker for my college physics series right now. I like it a lot, the problems are pretty entertaining and it explains concepts pretty clearly. Pretty expensive though...definitely buy used ;)</p>

<p>I highly suggest getting University Physics, I am using it right now to do AP physics C summer homework. The book is well thought out and explain problems clearly and effectively. Additionally, the problems are nice and hard and really forces you to learn the material.</p>

<p>zpmqxonw is right. i loved HRW and i got 5's on both tests (if i didnt have that book, who knows what i would have gotten).</p>

<p>Halliday rules.... that book was definitely why I got double 5s on phys C this year. Just go through the relevant chapters in that book, for me I think it was like 1-35? somewhere around there, and then review it all again with the AP books.</p>

<p>Thanks, i'm looking into Halliday now,but i still have some questions about it. Is it very heavy on calculus? what about conceptual stuff, how good is it in that area ? also, for physic C, do the course align more with Cal AB or BC, and about how heavy is it used ?</p>

<p>Oh yeah, and do the text assume that u have taken atleast some kind of introductory calculus course ?</p>

<p>Yes, I think you need to at least understand calculus for Halliday. It would probably prove helpful on the AP free response anyway, a ton of practice q I did and some of the actual problems had integration and stuff.</p>

<p>well, halliday is basically the canonical first-year calculus-based physics text. the exposition is clear, problems are good, organization is sensible... a lot of really good physics students swear by it.</p>

<p>lol iostream covered just about everything... it's an easy read - compared to other textbooks. that's what i like most about it. it's concise and gives you all the info you need... however, it may be confusing (physics in general is a very difficult subject) so you might need someone to explain.</p>

<p>ic thx, but i would still like to kno more about the textbook >< its just that i cant afford to waste over a 100$ , lol. So does Halliday uses a lot of calculus, and does it assume u know it or it kinda teaches u it as u go along.</p>

<p>it doesn't really teach yo uas you go along but there is an appendix in the back of teh book that goes over the calculus you need to know.</p>

<p>i say it's a very good investment. i didn't want to use $140 for it but i did and it helped me in the end.</p>

<p>halliday is not calculus heavy. it is unlike an advanced college physics text in that you don't need to know multivariable calculus concepts (div, curl, grad, etc.) at all. you don't even need to know a lot of single variable calculus for that matter.</p>

<p>all you need is a basic understanding of what integration and differentiation are, and how to apply those concepts to polynomial functions, sine and cosine, and the exponential function.</p>

<p>halliday will not teach you calculus. it will remind you of core concepts, but it's not going to tell you the precise definition of a derivative or how to construct a riemann sum or anything like that.</p>

<p>I think in the appendix they might explain basic calculus. There isn't too much calc though, its mostly just knowing basic stuff like acceleration = dv/dt and velocity = dx/dt. Have you taken calculus before?</p>

<p>Also, I guess I'm just oblivious but I didn't figure the following out until after the first quarter...next to each problem they give you at the end of the chapter, there is a variable amount of red dots. One red dot = easy, two red dots = medium, and three red dots = kinda challenging. The problems are awesome though, you actually learn stuff while you're doing them. I remember one conversion problem where I had to convert MIT "smoots" to meters. Its hard to explain, but I really loved the creativeness of the problems, much more fun than "a block is pushed down a frictionless inclined plane." </p>

<p>By the way, you don't have to pay 100 dollars for it. I think I got mine in "new" condition from amazon marketplace for 50.</p>
