AP Physics. Can I?

My school offers AP Physics B and I plan to take it…

Well my school said that to that class you need to take Regular Physics.

So my question is, Does AP Physics teaches something as in Regular Physics except more fast-pace OR it’s builds on to your knowledge of Physics?

Thanks! (:

AP Physics B covers a lot of new material. Basically, what you learn in regular physics might be covered in the first couple of weeks.

I took Physics C as independent study, but I know enough.

AP Phys is definitely fast-paced. I was required to be enrolled in regular Physics simultaneously so that I could keep up with the AP curriculum, and even then, I was often struggling. The AP curriculum is much more in-depth and abstract–most of our problems never involved any numbers, only variables. It also requires a grasp of calculus, while regular Physics only requires algebra.

I don’t know how your school’s normal physics class is, but if you can, I’d talk to the teacher and see if (s)he would recommend it. AP Physics was by far the hardest AP test I have ever taken, and I took seven just last year. I did pass with a 4, but that was after long, grueling hours sitting with one of my fellow independent study members and the teacher, working through sample problem after problem. It’s not something like AP CompSci that you can just take and pass no problem. This seriously requires dedication. It requires a new way of thinking (seriously! You can sit down to do a problem, knowing all the formulas and applications and not have a clue what to do. There’s a certain thought process you have to develop to see how to go about solving the problem). It is doable–I did it, and so did my classmate I mentioned earlier–but I would recommend talking with the teacher and maybe your guidance counselor.

Good luck!

dont worry you can do it, I was worried too last year but it’s not a big deal as long as you work hard and don’t ignore it! Make sure you will have time to devote to it.

Thanks. I think I’ll ask my guidance counselor and see what she says.

Hopefully I can and get started on my AP goals XD

I took AP Physics B with no prior Physics experience. In my school, our Physics class definitely had a faster pace and covered more topics in breadth and depth. It was certainly hard at times, but you shouldn’t be too worried as long as you study a bit outside of class with a review book (I recommend Princeton). Good luck!

My daughter took AP physics without the required regular physics course before it; she did fine. But she is now a physics major, so she was especially interested in/good at it. I wouldn’t recommend taking it just to check that AP box.

lol thanks.

And I am not taking AP physics to “check that AP box”, I’m taking it because I am ALWAYS bored out of my mind in a regular class…
