AP Physics for Cornell Engineering

Hi everyone,

I am a senior in Illinois with the following stats:

1550 SAT
35 ACT
4.0 UW
11 APs
10 Honors

Solid EC’s and essays

My APs include: Calc AB/BC, Physics 1, APUSH, AP Euro, APHUG, AP Computer Science A, AP Lang, AP Psychology, AP Government, and AP Chemistry.

Although my school does not offer AP Physics C, it does offer AP Physics 2. How important would it be to Cornell Engineering to take AP Physics 2? If I don’t take it, will it hurt my application significantly?

My take is it won’t hurt you because it’s Algebra based. Others may disagree.

What would you take otherwise?

You clearly have rigor.

You might note on the Common App under extra info section that your High School did not offer Physics C - that would be a good one sentence explanation.

You have Calc BC, Comp Sci and Chem - so i’m going to lean toward you’re fine.

My son was WL at WUSTL - a school where you need to apply ED to have a great chance. That tells me had he applied ED he’d have gotten in - and he didn’t have Calc BC or Physics C.

So I can’t imagine this will impact you.

Good luck.

Ideally you’d have C, but you can’t. Take the most rigorous path your school offers. Have a host of other options besides Cornell too. Good luck!

You’ve already taken two science APs and will have 10-11 total. Physics 2 is not a must-take.

You school’s AP offering will almost certainly be on the School Profile, so no need to explain it on your application. Ask Guidance for a copy if it’s not online.

I would take French V Honors otherwise. Would you suggest taking AP Physics 2 instead of French V Honors, or should I have 4 years of a foreign language?

UC Scout offers AP Physics C online.

@blessed101 I think French V honors to give you 4 years of a language is a good alternate option as it checks off a box that otherwise is left unchecked and maybe it would be seen as a good thing to have 4 years of a language in HS. You have Physics 1 and you can’t take Physics C as it is not offered. At this point it is really a personal choice IMHO.
