AP Policy Question

Oh, so even as a physics major, I would have to take biology classes to fulfill my science electives? My other question concerns the humanities 6 quarter requirement. The musical arts courses are intro to music classes. What if I were to join the Orchestra? Would I get credit for that instead of Intro to Musics classes?

Can three quarters of lanugage study be used to fill elective requirements? I am in German III, but don't really know much at all. If I were to gain a low-mediocre score on the competency exam, would I receive some credit and be placed in a class to finalize the three quarters? I really don't like languages, so anything I can do to make that process painless would be really awesome!

Jerew -- I really can't answer your questions, because I only know a few things from my daughter's experience and from reading the handbook. My daughter did well on her AP Music Theory class, but I don't think it conferred credit. She plans to take an Intro to Western Music class to fulfill her arts requirement. I am not sure about the language requirements. Why don't you give your admissions rep a call? I'm sure he or she will have the information you are looking for. Also, during orientation week you will meet one-on-one with a counselor who will answer your questions and guide you through the registration process.

Thanks sillystring7, you have already been a big help, as well as others on this board. I think I will talk to an ad rep sometime this week, instead of persistently asking questions here. I just want to be really prepared for Chicago, should I decide to go there.

I can't help with music but maybe of some help for languages. As noted, all take the language exam for your specialty. If you do very well you can pass out of the language requirement, you can also pass out of 1 or 2 quarters then you pick up the class from where your level of competency meets so if you pass out of one quarter you still have two quarters remaining etc. In the course catalog somewhere is the explanation for what becomes of these requirements. Electives work in here somehow.

Yippee! So maybe i can prepare for both the calc and the german placement exams! Just to make sure, physics placement is based off of the calc exam, correct, and honors physics is supposed to be for those with experience in college/college-like Calc I, II, and III?
Wow, I really should just talk to the admissions people, now that I don't have to worry about wasting my time in case I don't get in. I don't know if they would tell me as honestly about prepping for lanugage and calc tests, though.

Regarding the math placement test, my D just reviewed her AP calc work using her text and notes (she borrowed her text from the school in late summer), and just reviewed stuff while we drove from Boston to Chicago over a few days. I doubt she spent more than 10 hours in review. Anyway, she placed out of ALL first year math. It was actually a little strange, as she did not place into honors analysis, and there is no obvious next course - it all depends on major and interests.

So what turned out to be very interesting was that her advisor, knowing her plans to major in bio, directed her to see Jose Quintans, the head of undergrad biological sciences. She met with him and had a great meeting. Turns out he's also the head of the MD/PhD program at Chicago, which is what D wants to do. When he heard my D wanted to work in a lab right away, he took her down the hall and started introducing her. That led very quickly to a good lab situation.

Still don't know what she'll do for math, though. He recommended a computational neuro course.

What was interesting was how accessible faculty were during O week.

Wow, she must be a prodigy! From what I have heard so far on this thread and in reviewing the Physics book, the Calc is incredibly difficult. Did she take the calc test or a different math, or are they integrated? Does one need to know statistics in order to do well on the test used for placement into calc or phys?
