AP Probability/Statistics or AP Computer Science?

Title speaks for itself. I have to choose between these two to be on my schedule next year. Which will look better on my transcript?

It depends on a few things. Do you have as many math credits as you want? I know a few universities don’t count AP Stats as a math class. Also what are you majoring in? If it is Math/Science related, you will probably have to take the one you didn’t take now in college anyway.

OK, well I’ll be done with Calc BC this year and am thinking about dual-enrolling calc 3 next year. So I’ll have all the math credits I need. I want to go to Wharton.

I ask for the prestige because when I’m lurking around the site, people around here seem to treat AP stats as somewhat of a joke. Now I’m not saying that I think it is, but I’m just wondering if, to the adcoms, AP stats doesn’t look as good as APCS.

I highly recommend dual-enrolling in Calc 3 next year. If you do, then it won’t matter which of the two classes you take. If you don’t, you may not get into Wharton. I called Penn and Cornell both this year, and both said they expect a strong math class (and strong science for my engineering-bound son) from students senior year, or it is assumed they are slacking off. And they explicitly said AP Stats doesn’t count. Computer science will probably be more work at a time when you will be completing college applications and taking Calc 3, but will also show more breadth. But stats will be easy and won’t hurt you for admissions if you take the Calc 3 class. Having said this, my son has not heard back from his schools, so I may not be correct :-)

Sorry, yeah, I am definitely dual-enrolling. I have a problem with being definite in my statements…
It really is just a decision between APCS and AP Stats; which has more prestige? In fact, at my school, AP Stats is actually harder than APCS. So I was leaning to APCS if they were equal or if APCS is better.

Take the one that interests you the most. It won’t matter very much. AP Stats is not a joke, it is useful. But you might like the exposure to CS processes. If you have already done Calc BC it is fine to do AP Stats. But Calc 3 will look pretty good.

I agree, as long as you have already completed Calc BC and are also dual-enrolling in Calc 3 – you have already shown your strength in math, and taking an “extra” AP Stats would not be needed as a math class. Colleges don’t like AP Stats when students are taking it INSTEAD of Calculus… choose whichever of the two would balance your workload better and that you like more (or could use more in whatever career path you are interested). It sounds like your senior schedule will already be strong in rigor.

If you have finished AP Calc BC, you should choose the class that interests you the most. APCS will be useful in college when you’re taking an introductory course in programming. I enjoyed taking APCS because it was something unlike the classes I’ve taken before. I had to actually think when I took the class.
